Please take advantage of today's warm weather to do the following to prepare for the upcoming extreme cold weather. The weather service is predicting our temperatures to remain below freezing for nearly 100 consecutive hours with heavy snow starting tomorrow evening.
Please be safe and check on your family, neighbors and pets.
Tips to prevent pipes from freezing
1. Disconnect all garden hoses and all outside hose connections. If possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. Cover hose bids.
2. Insulate all exposed pipes in your basement, under your home, on outside walls or in attics. Consider using pipe sleeves available at most hardware and plumbing supply stores.
3. Letting a faucet drip during extreme cold weather can help prevent a pipe from bursting.
4. Cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations near water pipes should be sealed with caulking to keep cold wind away from the pipes.
5. Kitchen and bathroom cabinets can keep inside air from reaching pipes under sinks and in adjacent outside walls. Consider leaving cabinet doors open during cold weather to let the warm air circulate around the pipes.
6. Electric heating tapes and cables can also be used to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting but must be used with extreme caution. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to avoid the risk of fire. Tapes and cables with a built-in thermostat will turn heat on when needed. Tapes without a thermostat must be plugged in each time heat is needed.
7. Make sure you and your family know where the shut off valve is for your water supply in case a pipe bursts. Also make sure the lid on your water meter is in place and closed. It is a good idea to mark water meter and shut offs with something that stands above the ground so if they are covered in leaves or snow, they can be easily found if you need to turn water off.
