It’s spring, everyone even your hired helper is out planting plants and trees. Even throwing down fresh mulch and it all looks so good…BUT STOP!!!!🛑 are we actually planting correctly? Improper planting techniques, incorrect distance from your home, and even the way your installing your mulch can have serious effects on how long your plants THRIVE, SURVIVE, and what DAMAGE MAY BE CAUSED TO YOUR HOME…First. Planting to close to your home can cause both home and plant damage.. roots into the foundation or even drainage pipes, rubbing of the siding, gutter, and even the roof material.. lack of oxygen air circulation and sun light can cause mold diseases and die off of the back side of the plant.. recommended is min 2ft for any plant but certain shrubs and trees with more aggressive roots need farther and remember young plants grow and that measurement needs to considered front be outside of a mature plant… with that remember young plants grow. Might look a little thin right now but don’t over plant… now let’s talk depth. To deep or to shallow and we burry the root ball of the tree or leave to much exposed and get roots running along the surface and root girdle which we see all the time… next is planting prep… you MUST REMOVE the string around the tree holding the metal
Basket or burlap sack on.. it’s just waiting for the tree to grow and kill itself 3-5 yrs typically… now the metal basket and burlap sack that your installer or your preference really and no true data either way except most burlap is no longer natural and synthetic so it does not biodegrade like it use to so we recommend removing and letting the roots spread and not be compacted and entangled… and finally let’s talk mulch… no MULCH touching the bark and no mulched piled high on the base. We call it mulch volcanos..this causes bark rot, root girdling, and pest and disease infestation…. And remember if you like those nice crisp cut edges and/or tree rings do it at planting… below we will add some photos of mostly incorrect plantings
