Bug of the Week: The Carpenter Ant!
Carpenter ants are one of the most common, and most concerning pests for homeowners here in Oregon.
Where they live:
They thrive in the Pacific Northwest’s damp climate. You’ll find them in forests, but also in homes especially in moist or decaying wood around windows, roofs, and crawl spaces.
What they eat:
Unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t eat wood. They chew through it to build their nests, while feeding on sweets, proteins, and other insects.
Why they’re a problem:
As they tunnel through wood, they can weaken structures over time. Because they prefer moisture, their presence can also be a sign of water damage.
Fun fact:
Carpenter ants push out wood shavings called frass, which can look like small piles of sawdust near walls or baseboards.
How to help keep them away:
-Fix leaks and moisture issues around your home.
-Keep firewood stored away from the house.
-Trim trees and shrubs away from your structure.
-Seal cracks and openings around doors and windows.
If you’re seeing large ants or small piles of sawdust, it could be more than just a few bugs carpenter ants mean business!
