This is a great representation of how important slab and foundation insulation is for energy efficiency! All of that heat leaving the foundation is dollars on your energy bill that you’re just giving away to the moles and worms under your house.

Why does the energy code treat ground contact differently when it comes to slab insulation?

Pictured is a thermal image of what an uninsulated slab edge looks like during the winter. The yellow is heat that someone has just spent money on, leaving the building. The orange color on the ground is how this slab is heating the ground.

As we know, heat flows from higher concentrations to lower concentrations (hot to cold), but the code does not recognize heat loss to the soil below an unheated slab, which some building scientists and building programs like passive house dislike.

Regardless, the code does not stop anyone from adding insulation under a slab when it is not heated; in fact, it is an option that can be used to fulfill the second (4-ft. depth) requirement called out in the prescriptive R-value table.

This is just a taste from Robby Schwarz's practical guide to the 2021 and 2024 IECC slab-insulation code requirements. Read here: https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/understanding-the-energy-code-slab-insulation-requirements

Here’s an easily overlooked framing detail that can make a big difference on a build. We always build insulation into our window and door headers. Headers are a necessary structural component of a stud framed wall assembly, and depending on the number and size of your windows and doors, they can make a up a significant percentage of your overall wall area. If they’re not insulated properly, that’s a significant portion of your wall that is subtracting from your average wall R-value. A piece of 2” thick EPS foam panel is perfect for this application. A little forethought like this goes a long way into making your new home as efficient, comfortable, and healthy as possible!

The main slab is done at the Mosier home project! There’s nothing quite like a 5am pour time to beat the heat and be done before noon. We’ll be keeping it watered all weekend to make sure it cures properly and to keep cracking to a minimum.

✅ Stemwall forms braced in place
✅ Under slab insulation done
✅ V***r barrier sealed around all penetrations
✅ Rebar tied and chaired up
✅ Shower floor and tub drains blocked out
✅ Inspection passed with flying colors

This foundation is finally ready for the final concrete placement! The inspector said this is one of the best foundations he has ever seen, and that’s something we will always deliver on every one of our builds. Doing things right the first time isn’t that difficult; you just have to actually care about the quality of the product you leave with your customer. After 5am tomorrow, nobody will ever see any of this again, but we know it’s done right, and that’s something to be proud of.

Moving along at the Mosier home build! The ICF stemwall is braced up, rough plumbing is done, clean rock fill is leveled, and sub-grade insulation is going down. We like to put the v***r barrier on top of the insulation, as it minimizes damage to the foam panels while doing rebar and placing concrete.

Did you know that approximately 25% of a slab built home’s energy use goes directly into heating and cooling the ground under it? Adding insulation under the concrete is one of the best ways to cut down on heating and cooling costs in a new home!
