Roofers use chalk during estimates for a few practical reasons:
1. Marking Damage Clearly: Chalk helps roofers outline hail hits, wind damage, or soft spots so they can keep track while inspecting. It makes small or subtle damage easier to see, especially for photos.
2. Showing Homeowners Evidence: By circling or marking spots with chalk, roofers can point out problem areas in a way that homeowners (and insurance adjusters) can actually see and understand.
3. Insurance Documentation: Insurance adjusters often expect chalk outlines on inspection photos. It makes the damage stand out, so there’s less debate about whether a mark is a true hail hit or just dirt/granule loss.
