Thoune Wood Works

Thoune Wood Works I transitioned to being a woodworker with retirement after a 40 year public service and military career, and now have my own dedicated shop.

My experience with woodworking goes way back many years, and started with home improvement projects necessitated by many years of home relocation. I can now focus my energies toward crafting unique one of a kind custom made wood working projects that fit customer needs. Get in touch if you have something you need or want. My latest project is posted up!

Today's completed project is a little bit different than typical. Over a period of one month, a driveway gate with a solar powered gate opener and magnetic lock was built and installed on our driveway. We've had continual problems with package delivery truck drivers unable to successfully navigate the elliptical shaped driveway. To protect the driveway, plants and fence, a 14 foot gate was built and installed. One inch thick red cedar boards laminated together with glue, hidden screws and carriage bolts. Finished with three coats of spar urethane. Gate opener with control panel, battery box, solar panel and magnetic lock was a new activity for me! It is working with vehicle homelink systems and hand held remote controls. Yay!

This winter's bedroom end table project is complete! Rough sawn cherry lumber turned into a finished project. Not a complicated build, but nicely done with biscuit jointed side rails and stiles to tapered legs. These are a substitute for mortise and tenon joints, but work fine for this lightweight project. Tops are miter jointed trim to a solid inner top piece. Cherrywood stained with three coats of satin urethane and waxed tops.

A second winter project completed this month. This one is quite a bit funner, if that's a word! Coasters for use on two sofa end tables made over the past few years. These were easy to make with scrap lumber in the shop, which always has a use. Made from ash (had one board of that), hard maple and walnut strips, with a 1/4" round over and three coats of tung oil! Very nice!

A winter project completed this month. While a bit morbid in nature, I found a plan for building a cremation urn, potentially for me! I know, weird! It may or may not get used! Made from hickory, spalted maple, cherry and walnut pillars. Finished in two coats of danish oil and two coats of water based polyacrylic sealer. The secondary top lid fits on four dowels placed in a primary first lid and provides access to the interior. The next project won't be this morbid!

The black locust hair pin leg end table is done! You'll enjoy this video. The pieces have been around in finished form in the shop for awhile! Was time to get the pieces put together in an eclectic mid-century modern style. Enjoy! More cutting boards coming later.

Howdy, folks! Leftover lumber pieces in the shop turned into a cutting board for the granddaughter as a house warming gift. Two photos, one of the unfinished board and one of the finished board with four coats of tung oil and one final coat of beeswax/cutting board oil. My first 18 x 24 inch board, not perfect, but functional. Walnut, spalted maple, cherry and one unknown piece of oak. Not sure how the oak crept in there and didn’t discover it until glue up was complete. Oak is generally not recommended for cutting boards as it is too porous. There are more boards to come from other leftover pieces, including hickory.

A neat yard sign made for a neighbor to celebrate his granddaughter. Red cedar with three coats of spar urethane. Should last a long time. Template form letters and numbers used that work with a router, a brass guide and correctly sized bit. Fun project, and a learner!

Simple project this past week. Chicken nesting box for a neighbor's chicken coop. This one mounts to the outside of the coop versus being placed inside. Small number of chickens, so one box will do. It was installed yesterday! Happy egg laying!

Another winter project finished up! The adjustable height shop stool. Solid hickory lumber from the shop. Interesting project, replete with geometry! And we think we'll never use that beyond high school....LOL. I did. Enjoy
