In May, our Railroad Construction Company - SPS New England (RCC-SPS) JV crews completed track surfacing operations as part of an ongoing repair contract at two locations.

On the Orange Line, crews tamped and lined the track at six different locations in the tunnel in preparation for the FIFA World Cup. This process improves ride quality for the football fans from around the world visiting the area.

Crews also performed surface, line, and tamping maintenance along the Red Line Ashmont Branch’s Clayton Curve. There, crews tamped around 2,000 ft along the southbound track, helping the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - MBTA quickly remove a speed restriction in the area.

SPS is proud to have be part of the Route 79/Davol Street Corridor Improvements Project on the D.W. White Construction - SPS New England Joint Venture with HNTB. This project was recently named as the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) New England Section Project of the Year in the projects over $100 million category.

This project de-elevated and removed the Route 79 expressway, which allowed for both more waterfront access and approximately 21 acres of new open space.

This project will finish ahead of schedule, and it features the reconstruction of one bridge, four retaining walls, 3,000 linear feet of box culvert, six new stormwater infiltration basins, two new outfalls to the Taunton River, six new and reconstructed traffic signals, 100 pedestrian curb ramps, removal of 115,000 CY of earth, relocation of thousands of feet of utilities, and four miles of shared-use paths.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, founded in 1949 by Mental Health America. This year's theme, "More Good Days, Together," encourages us to think about what a "good" day looks like for us as individuals, for your family, for your workplace, and for your community.

During Safety Week last week, Marc Lyle from the Mass Laborers' Benefit Fund came and spoke with us. He's a Recovery Specialist in the LEAN (Laborers Escaping Addiction Now) program; he helps laborers and their families suffering from addiction and substance abuse navigate their way out. This program consists of members helping members, and it's 100% confidential. He took the time to speak with our company about the health and support programs available, including the Laborers' Support Network.

If you or a loved one is in need of mental health support, the 988 Mental Health Hotline is available 24/7 for everyone. If you are covered by the Massachusetts Laborers' Benefit Fund insurance, their hotline is also available 24/7. If you or a loved one is navigating substance abuse issues, Marc Lyle and the LEAN program can help connect you with the right clinical team from Blue Cross/Mass Laborers'. Help is available and 100% confidential.

SPS Maintenance Crews are taking on structural repairs and preservation work to the commuter rail overpass over Burnham Rd in Andover, MA. In anticipation of substructure repairs beginning and continuing throughout the summer, crews have installed steel shoring towers along the south abutment to jack the bridge. The crew built a 10-foot by 40-foot timber crib stack, installed three 6-foot by 12-foot load dispersion plates, and constructed eleven steel towers underneath the stringers.

to Safety Week 2026. Last week was a true testament to how much SPS values safety. Each day, we had the opportunity to learn more about fall protection, traffic control, confined space, job-specific hazards, and more.

A big thank you to all of our site and project teams that hosted events: the SPS - D.W. White Construction JV Haverhill-Methuen Project Team on Monday, the Marine Yard in Everett on Tuesday, the Seabrook-Hampton Project Team on Wednesday, and the Railroad Construction Company - SPS JV Southampton Yard team on Thursday.

On Friday, SPS hosted Neil Swidey Swidey, author of "Trapped Under the Sea" and editor-at-large at the Boston Globe Magazine. He discussed the 10-mile tunnel leaving Boston, the construction process, and the consequences of the decision-making process.

Thank you to everyone who participated last week and to the Safety Department for putting together an incredible week.

Since SPS was founded in 1984, bridge maintenance and deck repair have been the bread and butter of our operation. 40+ years later, our maintenance crews are still going strong, working around the clock, all over the state.

Crews recently performed some deck repair on Norfolk St in Dorchester, MA, as part of a larger bridge preservation contract. They chipped out older and deteriorating concrete, cleared the site, and then poured the new concrete.
