We had a great time celebrating Wicomico Public Libraries - Lewis R. Riley Branch Grand Opening! ππ
Gillis Gilkerson led construction of the branch located in Parsonsburg, Maryland, that offers Wicomico residents a space to read, relax and enjoy outdoor spaces - with adirondack chairs under its front porch and a fire pit overlooking a farmland vista.
Named after Lewis R. Riley, a Parsonsburg native who served in public office at both the local and state level before becoming Maryland Secretary of Agriculture from 2003 - 2007.
The +/- 2,500 square foot branch was constructed by renovating an existing structure, on property that formerly operated as a feed mill. The structure was completely demoed leaving only its exterior walls remaining, before being reinforced with sub-footings and steel to support its new 21-degree angled roof.
Architect David Quillin elected to use an exposed fastener roof system, one of many design choices that connect the property to times past and the natural world.
Additional design features, from large storefront windows, circular gable windows and hexagonal cork acoustical tiles, emphasize natural light and a connection to the outdoors.
Sophisticated HVAC and lighting control systems coupled with friendly gathering spaces will ensure the Lewis R. Riley Library will be a high-quality, well-used asset in our community for years to come.
Gillis Gilkerson Project Manager Don Murray led the construction project, also acting as Superintendent. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make this project a reality!
