Before your first fire this season, run through this quick checklist:

1. Check the burn status. In parts of Utah, including Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Utah and northern Tooele counties, winter wood-burning restrictions start Nov 1. On mandatory no-burn days, wood fireplaces and wood or pellet stoves can't be used. Check air.utah.gov before you light.
2. Look up the flue with a flashlight for buildup or blockage
3. Open the damper and check the draft
4. Look for nests or debris after summer
5. Use dry, seasoned wood only
