It's that time of year again! Time to prepare for the freezing temps!
Here are some tips to help prevent your pipes from cracking and causing expensive repairs later.....
1. Exposed Outdoor Pipes & Hose Bibs
a) Wrap with insulation and/or towels and socks, then secure with duct tape
b) During freezing hours, let the faucet run at a broken to light stream
c) Install automatic electric cable kit sold at the big box stores
2. Interior Plumbing Fixtures located on exterior walls
a) Open cabinet to allow heat around piping under lavatory sink
b) Drip faucets in broken or steady stream (hot & cold) during freezing hours
3. Water Softener & Garage Piping
a) Keep garage door closed & lights on to produce more heat. Safely place a space heater in the area to keep temperature above freezing.
b) Run at least one faucet inside the house at a slow, steady stream. This will maintain flow through your incoming lines to help prevent from freezing.
4. Exposed backflow valve
a) Wrap with towels, secure with duct tape, & cover with a storage container
b) For additional protection, place a low wattage incandescent light bulb powered by an extension cord under the storage container.
