The Fluevog family’s house will make you look twice. “The neighbors call it a ‘shape sorter’ house,” says Ali, who lives there with her husband, Adrian, and their two young sons, Jonah and Lucas. It’s a moniker she and Adrian—CEO of John Fluevog Shoes, the cult fave Canadian brand founded by Adrian’s dad in 1970—take as a compliment. “I’ve grown up making ‘unique soles for unique souls,’” says Adrian. “I’m used to quirkiness.” See inside: https://www.dwell.com/article/fluevog-residence-mahg-architects-vancouver-british-columbia-028b8dd0

The Harbor Bridge's last trip was across the channel it was built to clear.

The old Harbor Bridge closed to traffic on September 3, 2025. In late October and into the first week of November, the center span went down onto a barge named Prometheus and moved about six miles to a Port of Corpus Christi facility to be dismantled, and possibly reused.

The old arch was a six-lane through-arch about 5,818 feet long and 243 feet tall. It had carried traffic since 1959, and now one piece of it floated.

The ships that once could not pass under it now pass by while its remains are carried away. The demolition has been coming down since late 2025 and was still described as under way in October 2026.

There is something fitting in that. The arch was built to stay above the ships, and its last trip was made on the water. A structure built to be above the channel went out across it.

If you had a chance to keep one piece of the old Harbor Bridge, what would you take?

Where was the first air-conditioned high-rise office building in the United States? Right in downtown San Antonio.

The Milam Building went up in 1928, 21 stories tall, and it was made to be cool from the start. Willis Carrier, the man whose name is still on air conditioners today, led the team that designed its cooling, working alongside the architect George Willis.

Think about what that meant in a San Antonio summer. Before then, a Texas office in July meant open windows and whatever breeze decided to come through. Here was a whole tower of offices where the air stayed cool from the ground floor to the top.

In 1991 the American Society of Mechanical Engineers honored the building as a landmark, calling it the "First US air-conditioned high-rise office building."

Nobody in Texas needs to be told what air conditioning means. It is how we get through August. It is part of how Texas grew into what it is. And one of the first chapters of that story was written in a 21-story building on the San Antonio skyline, almost a hundred years ago.

Join us at TxA26 Annual Conference & Design Expo in San Antonio, October 15–17, where we’ll hear from architect, designer, activist, and author Ronald Rael.

As the Eva Li Memorial Chair in Architecture at UC Berkeley, Rael explores the connections between indigenous and traditional material practices, contemporary technology, additive manufacturing, earthen architecture, and border wall studies.

His groundbreaking work with Rael San Fratello and Emerging Objects challenges how we think about architecture, materials, technology, and place.

We’re excited to have Ronald Rael bring his perspective to TxA26: https://f.mtr.cool/dhc3f6i765
