Everyone defaults to citrus or avocado, but there is a whole world of fruit trees worth growing in San Diego. 🌳 The Dwarf Mulberry tops out around 15 feet, can be kept even smaller with pruning, and will fill an entire bucket with fruit for two solid months at peak season. If you have room for a fruit tree, this one deserves serious consideration.

Most people grab whatever rosemary is closest on the shelf, and then wonder why it looks wrong in their yard. 🌿 Uprights like Tuscan Blue work best tucked inside beds, while prostrate varieties are stunning spilling over rock walls. And if you really want to geek out, Gorizia is the most free flowering of them all with big beautiful light blue blooms.

California's iconic palm trees are under serious threat from pests and disease, and about a dozen species are disappearing fast. 🌴 The good news is there are still some great options if you want to keep that classic Southern California look without the heartbreak. Pygmy Date Palm, Mediterranean Fan Palm, Sago Palm, and King Palm are all relatively trouble free, low water, and still deliver the iconic California vibe.

Two trees, planted the same day, same conditions, and one is thriving while the other is on the brink of death. 🌳 The only difference is that one was planted too deep, burying the root flare where moisture sits on the bark and roots can't breathe. Keep that flare visible when you plant and you're setting your tree up for decades of growth instead of a slow decline.

Mexican Feather Grass looks beautiful in your garden but it’s devastating in our canyons! 🌾 Those golden seed heads act like tiny parachutes, carrying thousands of seeds miles away and displacing native plant communities in Southern California's open spaces. Blue Grama Grass, Carex Pansa, Deer Grass, and Pink Muhly Grass all give you the same movement and texture without the ecological damage.

Bougainvillea might be the most beautiful high-maintenance relationship in your garden. 🌸 Those vibrant colors are actually modified leaves, not flowers, and each branch only blooms once which means staying on top of trimming is the only way to keep it looking its best. The thorns are also no joke, so keep it well away from pools, walkways, and anywhere kids or pets spend time. Give it a wall, an arbor, or a hillside to climb and it will absolutely earn its place.

Moonshine yarrow might not be a California native, but the pollinators around here love it! 🐝 Its flat yellow landing pad is visible from a distance and gives smaller bees, hoverflies, and solitary bees an easy surface to land and move flower to flower without a fight.

It attracts all sorts of insects that quietly do the hard work of keeping your garden balanced. It’s one of our absolute favorites for San Diego landscapes.

If you've seen the same shrub in every bank parking lot and strip mall in San Diego, that's Pittosporum Tobira. Don’t plant this at your home! Your landscape deserves better. 🌿 Try California Wax Myrtle instead! It’s a lush, fragrant native that grows into a gorgeous screen or hedge, attracts birds by the flock, and sips water while doing it. Same function, a fraction of the water, and actually worth noticing.

Enter our three favorite San Diego natives, and every single one earns its spot. 🌿

🦇 Shaw’s Agave(agave shawii): A dramatic statement plant pollinated by bats.
✨ Red Buckwheat (Eriogonum grande rubescens): Delivers a shimmer of red flowers that flash silver in the breeze.
🌸 Beach Aster (Symphyotrichum chilense): Blooms 3 to 4 times a year, even in the poorest soil.

All three are water-wise, locally native, and incredibly beautiful additions to any garden.
