We’re honored to host an tour of the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, June 10th. 🎭

Designed by our San Diego office, The Joan reimagines Navy Building 178—once a base exchange, bowling alley, and “Hot Sounds” dance club—into a 40,000 sq. ft. performing arts hub in Liberty Station’s Arts District.

This adaptive reuse project preserves historic fabric while discreetly integrating modern systems. Sitting directly under the San Diego airport’s flight path, the design overcame extreme acoustic challenges—carving out space beneath the foundation and sealing interiors to create pristine listening environments.

Now home to , The Joan features a 300-seat mainstage, a 125-seat studio, and rehearsal space—advancing Liberty Station as San Diego’s leading regional arts destination and helping propel it to official Cultural District status in 2025.

Tyson King is a self-taught artist from San Diego whose work is rooted in optimistic abstraction — a practice built not on what the eye sees, but on what the spirit feels. Rarely mixing colors, he lets each hue speak for itself, allowing the boldness of every individual brushstroke to carry its own weight and intention. Drawing from the rhythms of everyday life, his paintings open a conversation with the viewer about what exists just beyond our visual perception.

In Rhythm and Flow, that conversation finds a natural home. Backed by the live sounds of The Quincy Reyes Trio, the evening brings together two art forms united by the same heartbeat. Tyson doesn’t create so you can look at his work. He creates so you can feel it.

✨ 25 years of coming together. At the Arts District Liberty Station “Come Together” celebration, we were honored to receive recognition for over two decades of work as architect of record and historical consultant at this beloved destination.

As Christopher Bittner, Principal Architect, shared: “Preserving San Diego’s rich military history while transforming Building 178 and the surrounding Arts District Liberty Station from a military training ground into a world-class showcase for San Diego artists has been nothing short of magical.”

This year, our San Diego office brought the cosmos to the runway. Flowing layers, shimmering textures, and celestial silhouettes — our design for the IIDA San Diego 2026 Fashion Show was a love letter to light, wonder, and the brilliant energy that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.

🌵obr + Lionakis QUARTERLY: Roots and Remnants 🌵

Mixed media artist, Eye Gato, and embroidery artist, thisgirlhugstrees have been creating and curating alongside each other since 2019. While their work may appear as opposites, their contrasting mediums find ways to support each other and add balance thru a complimentary expression of textures, colors, and emotions. With the use of found objects and an emphasis on the natural world, we find an exploration of unknown pasts and an inquiry into the growth that comes from our consistent actions.

Eye Gato’s work explores a revival of forgotten and overlooked objects, offering them a new life with playfully curated colors, while thisgirlhugstrees emphasizes the delicateness of existence through threaded lines and reminders of our interdependence with the earth. The body of work in Roots and Remnants is an adventure from the meadows to remote abandoned areas, finding life existing within the unknown memories and efforts of what has come before.
