The part of this front yard you can’t see is doing the most work.

The old beds had grown over the walkway, so we cleared them out and started with drainage to move water away from the house. A paver perimeter now runs along the foundation, turf went in out front, and the new beds got drought-tolerant plants with irrigation run right to them.

Now it’s green all year, easy to keep up, and ready for whatever this winter brings!

This backyard was so overgrown you couldn’t walk through it.

We worked with the homeowners to design it, cleared out the brush and concrete, then built it back with herringbone pavers, turf with paver panels set into it, river rock borders, and a new paver walkway and steps down the side yard.

For plants we kept what was worth keeping, their fruit trees and the bougainvillea, and added an olive tree in a circle bed and evergreens along the fence.

They were so happy with it that we’re heading back next month to do the front yard. Stay tuned to hear it from them!

Seamus and Sierra are getting married, and they wanted a backyard they could host in.

When they bought the house it was a dirt lot. By the time they called us, the weeds were taller than they were in some spots and their dog had nowhere to run.

We worked with them to design it, cleared it all out, then built it back with herringbone pavers, turf with paver panels set into it, river rock borders, and a new paver walkway and steps down the side yard.

For plants we kept their fruit trees and the bougainvillea, added an olive tree and evergreens along the fence, and left room for the citrus trees they picked out.

Now it’s a yard they’re proud to have people over in, and the dog finally has room to run.

They liked it so much they’re having us back for the front yard!

This yard had dead grass in the front, dead grass in the back, and a cracked concrete patio.

We replaced the lawn with turf front and back, and swapped the old patio for pavers that run under the pergola and along the house. Out front, paver stepping stones curve through the turf, with river rock edging around the planting bed.

We kept what was already working: their palms, the lemon tree, and the plumeria out front.

Now it stays green all year, and nobody has to mow it.

If your yard had a problem last winter, this one could make it worse. Forecasters say this could be one of the strongest El Niños since 1950, so here are the 7 spots where San Diego yards fail first.

Retaining walls: a lean, new cracks, or no weep holes.

Drains: clogged is the same as none, so run a hose into each one.

Slopes: bare dirt, or soil that slid down last winter.

Side yards: water sitting against the house.

Decks: soil washed out around the footings.

Patios: puddles still there the next day.

Covered spaces: no gutter, so the roof dumps along the edge.

Is your backyard kid friendly? This one wasn’t.

It was mostly gray concrete and an oversized deck. We took out the concrete and part of the deck, put in grass, and added cable railings so nothing blocks the canyon view.

Now the kids have room to play, and the whole yard feels greener and more open!
