Getting an ADU permitted is one milestone. Getting it built is another. 🏠
We followed detached new-construction ADUs in the City of San Diego from submission all the way through final inspection to see how quickly they became completed homes.
The gap between citywide and SnapADU projects grows significantly over time:
🏠 18 months: 13% citywide vs. 52% SnapADU
🏠 2 years: 24% citywide vs. 69% SnapADU
🏠 3 years: 43% citywide vs. 90% SnapADU
Why does completion matter? Applications tell us about demand and permits tell us about approvals, but final inspections tell us how many projects actually became finished housing.
For homeowners, it’s also an important reminder that the goal isn’t simply getting a permit. A successful ADU project requires feasibility, design, permitting, budgeting, and construction to stay aligned from start to finish.
