A year ago tonight at almost exactly this time our co-worker and my friend Eric Zangroniz was critically injured in a hit and run motorcycle accident. He barely survived. Today he continues on his path of recovery and has made amazing strides. The man who wasn't supposed to live, walk, talk, remember or be anything does and is. He has fought bravely and stubbornly towards one goal - independence. He is making that happen for himself and we are all very proud of him.
I want to give a public thank you to some of the people from work who really stepped in to help me help Eric even though they did not know him that well. These incredible people truly stepped up their game in life and worked harder with more focus and intent so that I could have the freedom to help Eric as I was able to do. None of it would have been possible had the staff of Pink Flamingo Landscaping not made it ok for me to not be there at work with them in the trenches for many, many days. Eric Zangroniz and I both owe these people a huge thank you for the support they gave both of us during that initial 5 months of the journey in Eric's recovery. Thank you, thank you and thank you again to Retta, Thebomb Ross, Brad Butler, Deecareful Pornh and Justin Peaverley from Pink Flamingo for really helping me out with Eric by covering for me.
There were amazing nurses who looked the other way for us when we needed to be outside of the box once in a while - Julie Christine and all of her amazing co-workers made it much easier with their guidance, coaching and tolerance. My friends who stepped up to support me when I was feeling down and less than hopeful truly made me feel loved and supported, even with just a phone call once in a while. Heartfelt appreciation to those who talked late in to the night on the phone with me - John, Rob, Marc, Robert and Ed, Christine, Sanna and Eric's sister Ana. A big thank you to the Traumatic Brain Injury support group at UCSD as well as Southern Caregivers of San Diego Association who really gave me great advice as I needed it to make each 'next step' with Z.
A special appreciation for my classmates at Landmark San Diego and some incredible instructors Jen Flynn, Lauren Robertson and Lane Entrekin. All of you helped me with coaching and support to create the possibility of Eric's recovery in my own heart and mind. Without the amazing work that you all do at Landmark, I would not have known how to create possibilities for Eric or myself.
Eric continues to recover and create new beginnings on an almost daily basis because of the support he has been given by all of us, directly or indirectly. He truly appreciates the love and we are all, each and every one of us, the better in our lives for having taken the opportunity to reach out and support someone in need. He and we are all worth it.
Thank you to all the caregivers in the world.
