A mid-century modern kitchen in San Diego where the backsplash does the talking and everything else listens.

The retro circle-pattern tile in terracotta, olive, and grey runs the full height of the wall and sets the tone for every other decision in this room. White gloss uppers keep the palette from getting heavy. Wood-tone lowers in warm walnut add depth without competing. And the stainless hood sits right in the middle of it all, unfazed.

This is what it looks like when a kitchen is designed around a single bold conviction and every other finish respects it.

A sneak peek at what's on the table right now.

The contrast between the espresso and white cabinetry already sets the tone for this future space. The mosaic tile brings just enough personality with brushed brass hardware threading through all of it.

Before: four separate rooms, four separate conversations.

After: an open kitchen and living area where the whole family lands in the same place.

This La Jolla home was redesigned around the way the family actually lives in it. Once the walls came down, light started moving through the space the way a coastal home always should. The kitchen stopped being a room you disappeared into and became the room everyone gravitates toward.

That's what a layout change actually does to a home.

We got a last-minute invite to a client's open house last week and we couldn't say no.

A kitchen and laundry room full of warm wood cabinetry, sage green accents, and more storage than you'd know what to do with. The space was packed with neighbors and colleagues, and you could feel how much the space meant to them.
