Can I have a side of sausage and avocado with my fried egg please? These beautiful Matilija “fried egg” Poppies have been poppin’ up all over town! They are native to SD and use the underground rhizome network to spread, so you’ll often find them in clusters! They’re also great at controlling soil erosion, so let’s get some fried eggs on our hillsides! 🍳🍳

Care:
🌞Full sun
🪏Well draining soil
💧Water 1x/week during first growing season, then they should be good to grow on their own after as they are drought tolerant!
🌳Perennial
⚠️Can spread rapidly due to rhizomes
🧪Do not require fertilizer, can be applied lightly in spring for an extra boost

Spotlight on two of our favorite native species: Cleveland Sage (Salvia clevelandii) and the Yellow-faced Bumblebee (Bolbus vosnesenskii) 🐝💜🌿

Cleveland Sage is identifiable by its fragrant, light purple whorl-shaped flowers that bloom from spring to late summer and crisp up into brown, still fragrant whorls for the rest of the year; Yellow-faced Bumblebees can be identified by their mostly-black body, with yellow around their head and two yellow stripes - one at the beginning of the thorax and one at the abdomen! Picture taken at Point Loma Native Plant Reserve on one of our guided walks 🌞

Lets talk about companion planting! Strategically (or randomly) planting things next to each other that take up different amounts of space/resources & help each other thrive! Check out slide 2 for information on the Three Sisters Garden, a tried and true method created long ago by indigenous tribes! 🌽🫛🎃 slide 3 is a happy Three Sisters garden in progress at a local elementary school!
