San Diego State University is expanding its Imperial Valley campus by adding a new STEM building. This 40,000-square-foot project will serve as a beacon on campus and provide STEM resources to SDSU students. This design-build project houses innovative science and nursing programs.

A.O. Reed is proud to announce that the UCSD Theatre District has received the ENR Award of Merit in Higher Education/Research for Southern California.

This transformative 913,000 square-foot neighborhood includes five new buildings and a 509,000-square-foot underground parking structure, creating a sustainable living and learning environment for UCSD students. Our scope included the full range of mechanical and plumbing systems needed to serve the neighborhood.

The UCSD Theatre District project provides a neighborhood for students to be near nature while encompassing a welcoming environment to flourish socially, academically, mentally, and physically. The project studied the placement of the buildings and found solutions to maximize natural ventilation in necessary spaces to boost sustainability initiatives.

This award highlights the project’s technical achievement and our commitment to delivering reliable, sustainable infrastructure that supports student life and campus growth.

Congratulations to Richard Morrison, A.O. Reed’s fifth-year sheet metal apprentice, for being named the 1st place winner at the 2025 Sheet Metal Apprentice Awards for the Southwest Region!

Beginning his apprenticeship five years ago, what started as an introduction into the trade quickly became a passion and a profession. With the support of strong training and mentorship at A.O. Reed, Richard has continued to build his skills and confidence. Reflecting on his path, he shared, “Thankfully God had a plan for me, and it led me to sheet metal, and I stuck with it.”

This recognition marks a milestone in his apprenticeship and is a testament to his perseverance, work ethic, and commitment to the craft. At the competition, Richard earned first place overall, first place in HVAC, and second place in architectural. A.O. Reed is proud to celebrate his achievement!

A.O. Reed is proud to share that Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla Tower II has been awarded the 2025 ENR West Regional Best Health Care Project in Southern California!

The 433,000 square-foot, nine-story hospital addition provides trauma, a NICU, and other facilities. The new tower will support Scripps Health’s commitment to delivering advanced medical care in the San Diego region.

On this project, A.O. Reed joint-ventured with Murray Company, as RM Mechanical. We are proud to celebrate not only our team’s efforts but also the collaboration of engineers, architects, vendors, and contractors who came together to deliver a facility that strengthens San Diego’s healthcare system and expands access to exceptional care.

A.O. Reed, partnered with Murray Company (RM Mechanical JV), has turned over the Scripps La Jolla Tower II project, further supporting Scripps Health’s commitment to delivering advanced medical care in the San Diego region. The work was performed within the active hospital campus and focused on expanding critical infrastructure and patient care areas.

The new space enhances Scripps La Jolla’s ability to serve patients across a range of specialties, including maternity care, surgical, imaging, and other patient-centered care. The project was completed in June 2025 and was closely coordinated to minimize impact with ongoing operations at the existing tower next door.

On Saturday, September 20th, A.O. Reed proudly joined thousands of community members at the San Diego Heart & Stroke Walk 5K for the 12th year! Hosted by the American Heart Association, this event supports their mission to fight heart disease and stroke. Employees from every department came out with family and friends, making this our highest participation yet.

We are proud to share that we surpassed our goal and raised the largest fundraising total in our 12 years of supporting this event! A special shout-out to Michele Ignacio, who took the lead and personally raised over half of A.O. Reed's total donations.

This walk is more than just an event; it’s a chance to come together, make a difference, and support life-saving heart and stroke research. We are grateful to everyone who joined us!

A new tower has been constructed to provide additional medical care, located next to the existing, occupied tower. The new addition mirrors the original Prebys Cardiovascular Institute, which A.O. Reed also completed in 2013. Between the two towers, it provides over 801,000 square feet of medical care space for the San Diego community.

A.O. Reed joint-ventured with Murray Company (RM Mechanical) and delivered the complete mechanical and plumbing systems for the new tower. The mechanical scope focused on expanding the central plant capacity by installing air handling units, exhaust fans, and steam boilers, generating an additional 17,000 pounds of steam per hour. A full VAV system was installed, with heating hot water supplied through heat exchangers. New chillers were added to support the operating rooms, MRI, and CHW/HHW pumps in the mechanical room.

Plumbing scope included medical gas, air, and vacuum systems, as well as ejector pumps for storm, grease, and wastewater. Fixtures and trims were installed throughout patient rooms, kitchens, restrooms, and other support areas. The emergency fuel system in the central energy plant was also expanded to support two new generators.

The new tower includes trauma, NICU, surgical, maternal care, and inpatient facilities, helping Scripps Health meet the growing needs of the San Diego region. This project was completed in June 2025.

A.O. Reed is proud to share that the Pepper Canyon Student Housing Project at UCSD has earned the Engineering News Record Best Residential/Hospitality Project Award in Southern California.

Our team designed HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems for this 580,000 square-foot, two-tower residential complex which provides 1,321 new student beds. This complex is focused on providing more living spaces and student amenities to the UCSD transfer students.

This recognition reflects the innovation, teamwork, and technical excellence that defined the project. A.O. Reed is honored to contribute to a sustainable, community-driven future for UCSD.

Initially contracted for the core and shell mechanical construction of the Torrey Heights campus, A.O. Reed was invited to construct the design-build, tenant improvement project for Becton Dickinson. This 230,000 square-foot project takes up one of the buildings on the Torrey Heights campus. Working collaboratively with the project team has allowed us to fulfill the client’s and lab’s requirements.

The project constructed an ISO 8 certification clean room facility, which upgraded the air handlers for extra air filtration. The HVAC scope installed HEPA filtration at the air handlers, fume hoods, pressurization requirements, lyophilizer equipment, water-cooled cold rooms, and stainless-steel ductwork for the fume hood connections. The plumbing scope installed specialty gases, lab air, lab vacuum, ultra-high purity N2, N2, CO2 piping, O2 piping, LN2 piping, Argon piping, Helium piping, and RODI piping system.

The project has an 18-month schedule and was completed by November 2023. A.O. Reed enjoyed taking on this highly technical project.
