I design the bunker you see. But I’ve always imagined the monster inside it.

When I sketch a bunker, I don’t only see sand, shape and strategy. Usually I see something lurking beneath it—waiting for the wrong shot, ready to catch you.

That is part of what I love about golf architecture: playing with the golfer’s psyche.

A bunker can intimidate you before you ever reach it. It can tempt you, deceive you, challenge you—and sometimes even scare you away from the shot you really want to play.

For years, these creatures of golf existed only in my imagination.

Now, with AI, I can finally bring them to life.

The bunker is real.
The monster is imaginary.
The emotion it creates is a mix of both.

This is where I’m having fun with AI—not asking it to design for me, but using it to reveal what I have always seen in my mind when I design.

“Golf architecture should play with the landscape—and with your psyche.”

Watching Episode 7 of The Hawk on Netflix, I couldn’t help but smile.

Three lines caught my attention.

“Video golf. I always loved video golf.” — The Hawk

“I hate video golf! I’ve always said it’s not real golf.” — Lance

And then, while playing one of the holes I had the privilege of designing for TGL…

“Why is there lava?!”

Well… because of Pizá Golf. 😉

For decades, golf architecture has been experienced by walking fairways and greens. Today, it also lives inside simulators, television, gaming, and storytelling.

Whether you’re on Team Hawk or Team Lance, one thing seems undeniable: technology isn’t replacing golf—it is expanding the ways we experience it.

As architects, that’s an exciting challenge. We are no longer designing only for the land. We are designing for cameras, broadcasts, simulators, and imaginations.

Years ago, one of my dreams—long before CGI became commonplace—was to become a cinematography architect: someone who could help create worlds that only existed on screen.

Seeing unique design ideas like Cenote, The Spear, and Flex become part of a story reminds me that architecture doesn’t always have to be built in the ground to leave a lasting impression.

The future of golf architecture may not be confined to fairways.

It may live anywhere a story is told.
Thank you Netflix for choosing our designs as cameos in Hawk.

PS cover with the lava is AI 😂

Valle de los Encinos

Walking a golf course wearing these two logos means more than I can explain on Instagram.

One represents a legacy that has shaped the game for generations.
The other represents a relentless pursuit of what’s next.

Today, those two paths meet in Chihuahua as Nicklaus Design and Pizá Golf collaborate on Valle de los Encinos.

As I walked the land, I couldn’t help but reflect on how fortunate I am to contribute to a project alongside a name that inspired me long before I ever designed my first golf hole.

Collaborations have a special place.

Legacy isn’t something you inherit.
Innovation isn’t something you claim.
Both are earned - one decision, one sketch, one walk through at a time.

Honored to wear both.

Valle de los Encinos will be the best inland golf course in Mexico thanks to my colleague Chad Goetz and friend Anwar Mauricio Elias and visionary Eugenio Baeza

“There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.”

Where you see the arrow is where we need to adjust that contour and bunker.

This is a render we commissioned to do for Jupiter Country Club in order to interact with the character and alter as we advance in the remodel process.
Next time you see this render, it will have that back right bunker on 18 fall back deep towards the lake on Hole 1 tees. The objective of this bunker is to create a dramatic feature of anticipation for players teeing off hole 1. When they see this bunker hanging deep behind hole 18, we want them to get nervously excited for the round. 😉
A sense of anticipation like a good Hitchcock thriller they are about to embark. What will they discover when we finish Jupiter Country Club ?
