3 label rules solar crews need to know 🔶
🏠 Hadley, MA: the placard goes up BEFORE the final. Permanently mounted on site, not handed to the homeowner, mailed or left for the inspector. Missing, temporary or wrong = automatic fail + re-inspection fee.
🏢 Presidio Trust (commercial): “WARNING: PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER SOURCE” on DC conduit every 10 ft, within 1 ft of turns and at penetrations. White on red, 3/8” all-caps Arial, reflective.
⚡ Somerset County, PA (ground-mount): voltage-hazard signs at every pad-mount transformer and substation, and on the fence. $1,000 fine, and each day is a separate offense.
📘 7 states now enforce the 2026 NEC: MA, ME, ND, CO, MN, TX, OR. Next up: Washington, Dec 31, 2026.
Our 02-013 red & white reflective conduit label, HP02 custom house placard and 06-013 aluminum DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE sign are on the site.

The 2026 NEC reorganizes rapid shutdown initiation devices in 690.12(C). The permitted list is now a service disconnect, a PV system disconnect, or a listed switch — all readily accessible. For one- and two-family dwellings, the initiation device goes at an outdoor location.

That wording comes from NFPA 70 (2026) Tentative Interim Amendment 26-2, Section 690.12(C).

From the field: the same crew can be working two code editions in two states in the same week. Check your AHJ and which code edition it has adopted before you update your label sets and plan sets.

Swipe to see the 17-022 Rapid Shutdown Switch label (2” × 5” red & white reflective) — a clear marker near the initiation device. Product page lists 2017 NEC 690.56(C)(3); confirm wording against your AHJ’s adopted edition.

We’ve been there. For any information, to place an order, or if you need help, call the FCD Labels office at (855) 792-4680 or email [email protected].

Tesla is stepping away from Solar Roof. Tile supply ended in August, and certified installers are now getting conventional panels instead. About 3,000 systems went in, and Tesla says it will honor warranties and parts. Some jobs that are still in progress may need redesigns.

We’ve been on the roof for mid-job changes like this. If a Solar Roof job turns into a conventional panel install, walk it again before final: your labels, placards and directories have to match what actually got installed.

Texas and Austin have enforced the 2026 NEC since Sept 1. The 690.12 rapid shutdown limits haven’t changed: 30 V outside the array and 80 V inside. The list of initiation devices is simpler, and the on/off wording is gone, so e-stop style buttons are allowed. The language for homes with more than one PV system is also clearer. Arkansas has been on it since Sept 3, and Washington follows Dec 31, 2026.

From one crew to another: code cycles differ by jurisdiction, so check which edition your AHJ enforces before you label and submit for inspection.
