BACKGROUND

Andrew Spurlock established the firm in 1988, to provide an innovative, site-conditioned approach, to both planning and landscape architectural design. He was joined that year by Martin Poirier, who had been a frequent collaborator and colleague since 1981; Marty became a partner in 1990. As the firm has grown in size, the result has been a lively collective collaboration on a broad ra

nge of projects that have earned national, state and local awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Institute of Architects and the American Planning Association. In late 2015, Marty Poirier made his departure from the firm and San Diego – embarking on other opportunities for himself and his family. In 2016 Leigh Kyle, Yu Ju Liu, and Brad Lents joined Andy as owners. They have been with the firm for the past decade and have been instrumental in its management, growth, and success. Together with Andy, Spurlock Landscape Architects continues their practice of creating transformative landscapes that connect people, communities and environments.

Parker grew up playing outside in sunny San Diego. The hiking trails and beaches connected him to the magic of our ecosystem. His first work experience was in a marine biology lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. A student of the living world, Parker graduated with a biomechanical engineering degree from Harvard College in 2019. During his studies, he took studio courses at the Graduate School of Design.

“During a summer program in Paris that blended biology and urbanism, my favorite professor, Robert Lue, guided me to understand the urban ecosystem as a living organism, an interconnected system. Since this introduction to the world of urbanism, I have been inspired to better understand the various systems that compose the greater whole of a thriving city with hopes of designing and cultivating a more efficient, healthy, and harmonious landscape.”

UCSD Ridge Walk is in the final stages of construction!

Scroll through to see how we approached user experience and identity on the UCSD campus.

We designed nodes at points of public facilities, building entries, gathering spaces, and college identity that are connected by elements such as a new bike path, lighting, trees, wood, and stormwater.

The new multimodal paths provide central circulation through campus gathering areas, a large flexible lawn and hammock seating within eucalyptus groves.
