Happy Pollinator Week!!! 🦋🐝🐞🪰🦇

This year, June 20-26th is National Pollinator Week, a time to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and a reminder to to support your local populations! What are some examples of pollinators that we all depend on?

🦋 Butterflies! In addition to their magnificent beauty, butterflies are incredible pollinators that support local environments.

🐝 Bees! Bees are very important pollinators. In fact, they are considered a keystone species, meaning many ecosystems (and billions of humans) depend on them for their essential pollination services!

🦇Bats! Did you know that bats are actually very important pollinators?😳 In desert climates, such as much of Southern California, many plants have evolved with bats as their primary pollinators. Many species depend on them for these services.

So how can support your local pollinator populations?

🌻 Plant a pollinator garden! Be sure to include as many native varieties as possible as local pollinators thrive most with these species.

🌵Incorporate more natives into an existing garden. Don’t worry if you haven’t yet included many natives in your garden, there are always way to bring them into a space!

🐛Go organic! Non-organic pesticides have been linked to decreased pollinator populations. Go organic to reduce population decline.

👩🏽‍🌾Support local environmental/regenerative agriculture organizations and farmers! Buying produce from local farmers using sustainable practices is a great way to support pollinators and your community.

Did you know that you can eat those young grape leaves?

Grape leaves are an important part of many Mediterranean cultures and are the basis of traditional dishes like Dolma and Warak Dawali. They can be preserved and prepared in a variety of ways, including brining, drying, and fermenting, just be sure they are washed thoroughly beforehand!

We will be preserving some to add to our pickled cucumbers later in the season 🍃🍇

We are officially through the cool-to-warm season garden transitions! 😅

It’s been a hard push the last few weeks to transition all of our gardens and farms to their warm-season glory. We are so grateful for our incredible team of farmers who have held it down and continue to create beautiful, food-filled spaces.

Also shout out to the last few cool-season crops that managed to make it all the way to the transition. This is the biggest cabbage we’ve ever seen!🥬👀

Some photos from our recent Warm-Season Gardening Class hosted by at the Green Acre Campus Pointe Garden!

After discussing the components of healthy soil, examples of seasonally appropriate crops, and common pest and disease management, students got to get their hands in the soil and plant out this season’s tomatoes. Soon they will be able to enjoy the actual ‘fruits of their labor’😊🍅
