Across California, something exciting is happening in yards everywhere. Traditional green lawns that need constant watering and endless upkeep are starting to disappear, and in their place are bold, beautiful native landscapes that feel alive, grounded, and rooted in place.

They're beginning to see the light. We're here for you when you're ready to transform your space into a fire-safe, drought-tolerant, native habitat.

The shift is gaining ground as more California residents trade thirsty grass for options that stand strong when wildfire season comes knocking.

The beauty of a native garden is how it evolves over time. As plants settle into their natural habitat, they begin to reseed and spread on their own. We planted just two Silver Lupine (Lupinus albifrons), and a few years later, there are now more than 15 thriving throughout the space.

This backyard space was ready for a transformation. We replaced a tired gravel area with a warm, durable Ipe hardwood deck, creating a clean gathering space while preserving the mature trees that give the garden its character.

Ipe is one of the most resilient woods available—naturally rot resistant, incredibly dense, and beautiful as it weathers over time.

Next up: integrating the surrounding planting beds with California native plants to soften the edges and bring the space to life.

Spring is beginning to unfold across California 💙

In Golden Gate Park, blooming Ceanothus surrounds a towering cypress in a wave of blue — one of the most iconic signs that the native landscape is waking up.

Closer to home, a pruned Ceanothus shows how these versatile shrubs can be shaped into small trees, adding structure, habitat, and year-round presence to a garden.

And at ground level, the delicate bloom of Blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium) reminds us that native gardens reward attention to detail. These small seasonal flowers support pollinators while bringing moments of surprise and color to the landscape.

From canopy to understory to meadow — California natives work together to create resilient, living ecosystems.

Low water. High habitat value. Deep sense of place.

It’s happening.
The wind and rain may have felt relentless lately, but as Longfellow wrote, “Into each life some rain must fall.”

And right on cue, the Ceanothus are beginning to bloom — one of California’s clearest signs that Spring is just around the corner.

Thinking about bringing native California beauty into your space this season?

Sheet mulching a yard to kill all the water-thirsty grass and replacing it with all California native plants. A dry creek bed was added for visual interest and to support the natural look. This Balboa Terrace native front yard is going to stand out amongst the manicured lawns that dominate this neighborhood. Hopefully they'll see the light!

Beginning to see the light!

Research is showing that California native plants growing next to, say, avocado groves is good for the orchard and for all kinds of pollinators.
