We are pleased to share that La Fénix at 1950 has achieved an Honor Award in Community Impact from .norcal!

La Fénix at 1950 provides 157 affordable homes for families in the Mission, as well as a permanent home for nonprofit service providers. The ground level courtyard, or the Zócalo, links amenities to encourage social interaction. The Paseo de Artistas is a mid-block passage with commissioned murals, and art studios and classrooms operated by the Youth Art Exchange. The Jardin de las Familias on the 6th floor is planted with natives and southwest plants, providing a play area, family gathering spaces, and panoramic city views. A partnership with community organizations led the engagement process, which allowed the design to be guided by long-term neighborhood constituents.

As part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in San Francisco, President Biden hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping and other international leaders last night at the at Piers 15 and 17. This momentous occasion comes on the heels of the Exploratorium’s historic achievement of Net Zero Energy operations, making it the largest museum in the United States, if not the world, to generate as much or more energy than it uses on an annual basis.

“As a global leader in science learning, we’re proud to model the innovation and resiliency needed to create a more sustainable world,” said Lindsay Bierman, the Exploratorium’s Executive Director and CEO.

We are proud to have been part of the innovative team that converted two crumbling piers on the Embarcadero into a flexible and adaptable facility that is “an exhibit in and of itself,” creating maximum opportunities for improvisation, change and adaptability, and empowering visitors to care for our planet.

The Monterey Conference Center Portola Plaza has won a 2023 Urban Design Award form AIA California!

The renovation of Portola Plaza, completed in conjunction with the renovation of the 40-year-old Monterey Conference Center by , reinvigorates an important economic driver for Monterey. The Plaza is the civic gateway and living room of the city, terminating an important retail street, activated on all sides by important uses and serving as a connector between the downtown and the historic cannery waterfront.

From the jury: "The Conference Center addition creates a transparent and compelling backdrop–to a curbless public realm–that appropriately preferences the pedestrian as much as the car, despite the obvious need for a vehicular dropoff. The geometries of the space simultaneously allow for flexibility while centering the composition. Lighting, landscaping, and artistic ground plane treatments work together to reinforce a distinctive environment."

Sister Lillian Murphy Community, designed by and with GLS, has been awarded a 2023 Housing Award in the category of Excellence in Affordable Housing.

Organized around an expansive, verdant open space, this community of 152 affordable homes in San Francisco’s Mission Bay is dedicated to Sister Lillian Murphy, former CEO and a local pioneer who discovered, through her work in public health, a direct connection between physical health, mental health and housing. A ground level music school and childcare center open onto a giant timber bamboo forest that meanders through multi-level courtyards, connecting homes and community services through open air circulation. The project's outdoor spaces provide a rare opportunity for intergenerational mixing, creative play, and interaction with neighbors.

Spring is in full display at the New Stanford Hospital. The 12-acre medical campus is designed with a strong landscape narrative that prioritizes the connection to nature as central to its mission of healing for patients and families, while providing a healthy workplace for faculty and staff. This landscape centered model reduces operational costs by addressing psychological, social and physical needs of the entire healthcare community.

HOPE SF: Rebuild Potrero has won the American Society of Landscape Architects National Award of Excellence in the Urban Design category!

The jury praised the urban design as a “masterful integration of affordable housing into intense topography that defines new hierarchies of public space.”

Rebuild Potrero is reinventing public housing while providing vulnerable citizens a refuge from displacement. 606 units of aging public housing are being replaced by a denser and more diverse mix of housing types. The 38-acre neighborhood will have a unique open space network of terraces, sloping parks, community services and streets linked together by landscaped staircases carved from the south-facing serpentine slopes of Potrero Hill.

A crucial component of the project is the commitment to maintain community. By carefully phasing construction, current residents will not be relocated off site at any time during the process. The first phase of housing has been built and was occupied in Spring 2019.

Congregation Kol Emeth, completed with Field Architecture and EID Architects, is the nation's first LEED Platinum synagogue, and has received a Merit Award from .

"The jury praised the innovative and provocative use of recycled wood on the exterior. The building sits beautifully in its landscape – featuring a native planting garden with rainwater catchment – and the delicacy of movement from inside to out is uncommon for an institutional project, encouraging community with the diverse ways that spaces can be used and experienced. This is an evocative, beautiful project that transforms the synagogue."

Congratulations to , , and the entire project team!
