I never particularly saw myself as a teacher, I honestly never had even put any thought into it, but about 10 years ago, I started paying attention to comments on my YouTube videos. A lot of people were asking for plans for my pieces, and I was spending a lot of time answering questions on my social media. It just made sense to give it a try. I couldn’t wrap my head around doing workshops in my shop I was renting at the time. When we finally bought a place, and moved out to my current situation, it all fell into place. Teaching these courses was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve met so many amazing people, learned so much from them, and have a blast doing them. If you’re interested in one of the six courses we offer, DM me or click on the link in my bio.

The P A R K E R and I go back a long ways. It was the first credenza I ever built with this much mid-century flare to it. Previous pieces were very heavy with inspiration from the likes of Sam Maloof and Vladimir Kagan. I had just spent a few days in Palm Springs, stayed at and did a lot of taking in the sights… The architecture, the vintage stores, and the overall vibe of Palm Springs got my mind going bananas. I remember seeing a console at one of the vintage stores, the door pull caught my eye, and I designed the Parker around that small detail. I had the body of the Parker already put together in my mind, but I had no idea how I would build it out of solid wood. The only way I could keep these contours would be if I built it out of plywood, laminating, one piece on top of the other. I remember by the time I was done with the drive home, I had it 95% designed in my head. Once I’m at this point, there’s very little sleeping until is done. Times like that are priceless. Over the years I’ve encountered less and less of these times. This week I started on a new credenza, it’s been about eight years since I’ve attempted to design a new credenza. Looking forward to sharing the progress, let’s see if I can still put in a 18 hour day….

This is about the closest I’ve ever come to posting a selfie on my social media. I try to keep things tight, and mostly focused on woodworking although during the pandemic you probably knew how I felt about things. And that’s not a bad thing (unless you can’t handle different viewpoints). The important thing is authenticity, something that we seem to be losing in this busy world of ours. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been approached to advertise a product… they offer to pay me to tell you how good it is. Something that doesn’t even have to do with woodworking, or align with my values. It feels good to have never accepted a penny for a post, photo shoot or shout out. Or… how many agencies want to take over my social media, and make it work with an algorithm that will slowly deplete the soul of anything I do. Lately it’s AI, how can I simplify everything I’m doing on a day-to-day, make it more efficient, and I don’t have to think about it. All of this is not authentic. It is soulless, and it goes against everything that I have held sacred from the beginning. No judgment if you decide to go that way, but for what I do, what it requires, there’s no place for that. I have been trying to post a reel, or post every day, before it was once a month if I could find time, + felt right. Posting consistently even feels a bit contrived to me. I’m trying to find the happy medium of not paying someone to do it, but being aware that this platform gets the word out about what I do. So here’s a simple nudge to support the companies who haven’t given in to the machine. There might be some misspellings, some grammar issues, especially in my case…. Some things that don’t make perfect sense, but that’s part of being human. The alternative is soulless, empty + not sustainable for utmost possible mojo + creativity!! Let’s stop Fu€king up the most sacred gifts we as humans have, which is the opportunity to display our creativity, individualism, + originality. This shoot was for with a side of friends of mine + a good example of a grassroots companies who are keeping it real and have massive amounts of soul! Let’s stick together folks!

This was one of my very first furniture pieces I designed and built. The year was 2005, I had just quit the reclaimed furniture gig, I didn’t have the patience for it anymore. I had always loved the mid-century feel, so I did my best to create my own style heavily influenced by a couple of my favorite designers at the time. and I look back and appreciate the fact that I never had any traditional design schooling. I attempted to try and get into the Design Center in Pasadena. It was a year before I built this piece actually. I didn’t have much of a portfolio, I remember the counselor asking me what designer I try to emulate. I asked her if she meant who I’m inspired by…. she said no who do you emulate? That’s when it struck me that designed school was not for me. Although I continued to do night classes there, driving two hours, each way three times a week. The only reason I wanted to go there was so I could use their Machinery. Luckily I wasn’t built for that kind of setting, I saved my money and bought my own tools. My first shop was outside, I would cover it up with plastic every night. I’ve lived in a barn, I sectioned one corner in plastic and built a room in there. I showered with a hose, ate nothing but honey bunches of oats for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and worked, worked a lot! I barely had enough money to take a girl in a date and spent most of the time alone, it was the best time of my life, and for sure the most memorable. I sold this piece to one of my best friends for a thousand 1 dollar bills😂

T H E M A C K E N R O W - I have made this piece more than I can count. It’s been made in multiple colors, materials, even leg variations. If I would have known I was going to build this so many times, I would’ve simplified the build🫣
