🫶 Wrapping up National Roofing Week: It takes a village to build a legacy!

As National Roofing Week comes to a close, we wanted to take a step back from the shingles and gutters to focus on the real backbone of McLeran Roofing: You.

Serving Marin County since 1929 means we’ve been around for nearly a century, but we know we didn't get here alone. It takes an incredible network of dedicated people to keep our community safe and dry, and today we want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who makes it possible:

• To Our Loyal Customers: Thank you for inviting us to your homes and trusting us with your most valuable asset. Serving generations of the same Marin families is the ultimate honor.

• To Our Hardworking Employees: You are the face of McLeran. From our precise estimators to our incredible crews working hard on hot roofs, your craftsmanship, safety standards, and dedication keep us on top.

• To Our Trusted Suppliers: Thank you for always keeping us stocked with the highest-quality, fire-safe materials, even when supply chains get tough. You ensure we never have to compromise on quality.

• To Our Partners (Realtors, Property Managers, & Referral Allies): Thank you for putting your reputations on the line to recommend us. We value your partnership immensely and love helping you protect your clients' investments and smooth out escrow deadlines!

The McLeran Promise: Trends change and roofing technologies evolve, but our gratitude for the community that supported us through 1929, the building of the Golden Gate, and into today remains exactly the same.

From our family to yours, thank you for a fantastic National Roofing Week. We are so proud to be Marin’s trusted roofers!

Happy National Roofing Week! 🏠✨

When we think about roofing and exterior home protection, gutters don't always get the spotlight they deserve. But they play a massive role in protecting your home's foundation, siding, and roofline from water damage.

Since it’s a week dedicated to celebrating home protection and professional craftsmanship, we wanted to share a great example of how a smart exterior upgrade functions beautifully while completely transforming a home’s aesthetic. Check out the difference in the "Before & After" photo!

Here is why upgrading to a quality gutter system makes such a difference for a home's longevity and look:

Seamless 5 1/2-Inch Fascia Profile: Rather than looking like a bulky afterthought, fascia gutters are designed to mimic architectural trim. They create sleek, clean lines that blend seamlessly into the existing roofline.

Rust-Free Aluminum Construction: High-quality aluminum gutters will never rust. This ensures they maintain their structural integrity and look pristine through years of heavy rain and changing seasons.

Customized to Your Aesthetic: Modern gutter systems come in a wide variety of colors. This allows for total customization—whether the goal is to seamlessly match the original trim (like the clean look framed in the photo) or to add a bold, modern accent.

An Affordable Upgrade: It is one of the most cost-effective investments a homeowner can make to boost curb appeal while providing critical protection against water intrusion.

The right roof keeps you covered, but a great gutter system completes the frame.

🫣 The Good, The Bad, & The "Who Did This?!": Weird Things We Find On Marin Roofs!

Homeowners see their roofs from the driveway, but our crews get a bird's-eye view of what’s really going on up there. While we love a beautifully installed roof, we also run into some pretty wild, head-scratching "creative engineering" and DIY attempts that leave us speechless.

To celebrate National Roofing Week, we’re pulling back the curtain on some of the strangest roofing anomalies and odd fixes we’ve uncovered around Marin County over the years:

• The Shingle Lasagna (Multiple Layers): We’ve stripped roofs only to find three or four layers of old shingles stacked on top of each other like a historical timeline. Not only does this trap heat and rot the wood below, but it adds thousands of pounds of unnecessary weight to a home!

• The "Tar Everything" Technique: Got a leak? Just dump a five-gallon bucket of roofing tar over the entire area. We’ve seen chimneys and vents completely buried in mountains of dried tar. (Spoiler alert: It usually didn't stop the leak, it just made a giant mess!)

• Creative Flashing Fixes: Standard metal flashing is designed to keep water out of roof valleys and joints. But we've found DIY substitutes ranging from license plates and old road signs to literal layers of duct tape and garbage bags.

• The Rogue Shingle Patterns: Shingles are meant to be laid in a precise, overlapping grid to shed water. Every now and then, we find a section where someone clearly lost the instructions and laid them sideways, backwards, or in a patchwork quilt pattern.

The Professional Difference: A roof is a highly engineered system meant to protect your family and your foundation. When it comes to keeping Marin dry, "good enough for now" usually turns into an expensive headache later!

Roof Myths Busted: Fact vs. Fiction for National Roofing Week! 🔍

When it comes to keeping your home dry, there’s a lot of old advice floating around. Today, we’re busting a few common roofing myths we hear all the time around Marin County, so you can protect your investment like a pro!

Myth #1: "A minor roof leak isn't a big deal if it stops raining."
FACT: Water follows the path of least resistance. Just because it stopped dripping into your living room doesn’t mean it stopped rotting your plywood structure or growing mold in your attic. Catching it early saves thousands later!

Myth #2: "You can just layer new shingles right over your old ones."
FACT: While technically possible, it’s usually a bad idea. It traps heat (shortening your roof's lifespan), adds massive weight to your home, and prevents us from inspecting the underlying wood deck for hidden rot. And, it makes finding leaks more difficult as they travel between the layers

Myth #3: "If my gutters look empty from the driveway, they're clean."
FACT: Marin's redwood needles and oak leaves love to pack down tightly right at the downspout openings. Gutters can look empty from below while secretly holding inches of standing water that backs up under your roofline.

Myth #4: "All roofing materials perform the exact same way."
FACT: Between Marin’s damp coastal microclimates, blazing summer heat, and strict fire-safety zones, material choice matters immensely. Modern architectural shingles, metal, and synthetic tiles are engineered for completely different lifespans and weather loads.

The McLeran Takeaway:
Regular maintenance and a quick annual inspection are the cheapest ways to extend the life of your roof. Don't wait for to find out there was a problem!

National Roofing Week starts today and we are celebrating 97 Years of dependable roofing in Marin.

Since we opened our doors in 1929, McLeran Roofing & Gutters has had one job: keeping Marin County homes safe, dry, and secure. To celebrate National Roofing Week, we took a look back at the incredible history we’ve witnessed right here in our own backyard.

When we started, things looked a little different around here! Take a look at how much Marin has grown while we’ve been keeping a roof over your head:

1929 - McLeran Roofing Opens for Business
We started servicing roofs across Marin. That same year, the 43-mile Sir Francis Drake Boulevard was officially dedicated!

1937 - The Golden Gate Bridge Opens
Before this, the only way to get to SF from Marin was by ferry. We watched the North Tower go up and completely change our county forever.

1949 - The Marinship Boom
During WWII, Sausalito’s Marinship yards erupted into a massive shipbuilding hub, constructing 93 liberty ships and tankers for the war effort.

1962 - The Civic Center is Completed
Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural icon officially opened in San Rafael, shaping Marin’s visual identity.

1972 - Preserving the Landscape
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) was established, ensuring that Marin's beautiful coastlines and hills stayed protected for generations.

A Century of Trust: Through the opening of the Golden Gate, the evolution from traditional tar-and-gravel to modern eco-friendly roofs, and generations of local families, our core promise hasn’t changed. We build roofs to perform not just today, but decades from now.

Thank you, Marin County, for trusting us with your homes for nearly a century. Here's to the next 100 years! 🥂

Why homeowners are choosing to upgrade:

💎 Stunning Visuals: Deep shadow lines and a multi-layer design give your roof massive dimension and high-end curb appeal.

🛡️ Built Like a Tank: It creates up to five layers of roofing protection once installed, making it one of the heaviest, most durable shingles on the market.

⛈️ Maximum Protection: Features a Class 4 impact rating (the highest level of hail resistance) and up to 130 mph wind protection.

✨ Stays Clean: Built-in StreakFighter® technology prevents ugly black algae streaks, keeping that rich Black Pearl color looking brand new for decades.

🛑 Myth: A spot on your ceiling means you need a brand-new roof.

Fact: Not always! Sometimes a leak is just a loose piece of flashing, a single damaged shingle, or a clogged gutter backed up under the roofline.

At McLeran Roofing & Gutters, we don't sell you a whole new roof if a targeted repair will do the trick. We’re here to give you honest answers, quality work, and peace of mind, never a pushy sales pitch.

Got a mystery leak? Let us take an honest look.
