Walk your deck this weekend and look for these 5 things 👇

1. Soft or spongy boards
2. Loose or wobbly railings
3. Rusty fasteners, joist hangers or popped nails
4. Gray wood that soaks up water instead of beading it
5. Dark stains or rot where the deck attaches to the house (the ledger)

Take number 5 seriously. That connection holds the deck up, and it's about to carry snow load all winter.

Here's what we found behind the siding on a recent job. 😬

That's a rotted sill plate and sheathing next to an entry door. From the outside, it looked like a little soft trim. Opened up, it was a lot more.

Soft spots, paint that keeps peeling in the same place, or trim that gives when you press on it? Get it checked before the fall rain and the spring melt make it worse.
