HVACTA: Universal 608 Certification

After six weeks of hard work, dedication, and commitment, yesterday we completed the Universal 608 Certification Exam. I am confident, great things are in store for all ten participants… so much so, tonight we celebrate!

HVACTA: Universal 608 Certification

For those not in the know, here’s what the EPA Universal 608 is all about:

The EPA Section 608 certification is a U.S. federal certification HVAC technicians need to legally handle regulated refrigerants during work such as servicing, repairing, maintaining, or disposing of air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

The certification exam is issued through an EPA-approved certifying organization, not directly by the EPA. In our case, HVVAC Technical Academy offers two approved proctors to handle testing and overseeing all goes well.

The goal in having technicians go through the certification process is to prevent refrigerants from being released into the atmosphere AND to make sure safety protocols are followed.

A few details along the way:

Requirement: It is mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act for anyone handling refrigerants.
Comprehensive coverage: Unlike the Type I, II, or III certifications, the Universal certification allows a technician to work on all types of appliances, from small appliances like window units to high-pressure commercial and industrial systems.
Scope: It covers service, repair, maintenance, and disposal of equipment with refrigerants, ensuring proper handling to protect the environment.

The Universal exam covers four sections:
* Core: Refrigerant safety, environmental regulations, recovery, recycling, and reclamation.
* Type I: Small appliances.
* Type II: High-pressure systems.
* Type III: Low-pressure systems.

In order to become universally certified, you must pass the Core and all three type sections under the required proctored testing conditions. Good news, Universal certification does not expire but each person holding a Universal certification needs to keep current on any EPA regulation changes.

If you're getting started in HVAC, this is one of the most important certifications to earn.

The level of dedication to HVAC was quite impressive as most participants had perfect attendance and was always into the process. With confidence, each possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required… no doubt success will follow each along their personal and professional path.

HVACTA: Term Final Day

An exciting element in HVAC is every day is a new adventure. Sure, there may be common issues from time to time, each trip offers unique challenges and opportunities for YOU to be a HERO!

Over the past six weeks the amount of growth has been beyond belief. Today, our final day, all enjoyed complete system scrapping, pump downs, evacuations, and just about everything in between.

HVACTA: Term Final Day

Recognizing HVAC Technicians need to be familiar with a wide array of HVAC issues, we get each participant equipped to recognize issues through Clarity, Choice, Confidence, and Competence. As the term ends, all get their hands on scrapping ac units.

When it comes to scrapping, technicians must ensure the refrigerant has been professionally and legally evacuated. Each participant uses their own tools, checks systems, and recovers accordingly. To note, venting refrigerant into the air is illegal and carries hefty fines. Speaking of which, tomorrow all will be taking the Universal 608 Exam here at the facility.

Safety is #1…

* First and foremost, proper PPE is required, including safety glasses, gloves, sturdy boots, and 100% attention.

HVACTA: We DO by DOING

Aristotle stated in Nicomachean Ethics, “What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing”

Deep in the 5th and 6th week all are crafting their HVAC diagnostics, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, recovery, and so much more. The amount of growth with their knowledge, skills, and abilities within the HVAC Service Technician world is quite remarkable.

It is truly amazing how much one can learn (especially by DOING) in six weeks. To note, the learning by doing approach (also known as experiential or active learning) is a student-centered educational method where individuals acquire knowledge and skills through direct participation, hands-on tasks, real-world projects, and reflection.

Think about it for a moment, if you were to focus and dedicate six full weeks (approximately 210 hours) on one goal, what would your future look like? The first step is to make a commitment, not only to those around you, but mostly to and for yourself.

HVACTA: Andrew Sharing the Knowledge

One of the awesome things about HVAC Technical Academy are the mentors. Together, Andrew and Robert offer over 60 years of HVAC experience. To each participant’s advantage, their knowledge and practical applications lift everyone.

Andrew has been part of 2nd Chance University and HVAC Technical Academy from day one. His knowledge is unmatched as all participants can confirm.

HVACTA and Mini Split Action

Over the past couple days all participants took part working with mini-split systems. Our goal at HVAC Technical Academy is to introduce first year on the job experience… all in six weeks. As a result, we work on mini-splits, heat pumps, straight cool systems, package units, and portable system.

Heavy hands-on learning… progressing every day, every moment.

A mini-split HVAC system is a heating and cooling system that does not require ductwork. In Florida, many homes and commercial businesses take advantage of this cooling (or heating) option.

For those considering a mini split over a traditional AC system, here’s a few things to consider:

* Mini split: do not require ductwork and each indoor unit can control its own room or zone. Overall, it is efficient, especially in homes with duct losses

* Traditional central AC: one central system cools the home through ducts while one thermostat typically controls the whole house. Overall, central filtration and whole-home air distribution are convenient.

Which AC system is best for you? Good question but there is no single answer as multiple factors such as budget, architectural design, specific needs, and if you have existing duct system need to be considered.

HVACTA and the HVAC Industry

Our mission at HVAC Technical Academy is to closely match work environments, expectations, and challenges HVAC Service Technicians will face on a day-to-day basis. There is no more effective and efficient way to learn than by DOING.

Today marks the last day of week five… and talk about progress. With one full week to go, all will concentrate on homing in their knowledge, skills, and abilities when it comes to hands-on applications. Over the past weeks all have working hard and riding the HVAC track inside and outside… and it is going to be a steady and progressive ride for the final week.
