About a month ago, I temporarily closed my services. The reason is personal that I won’t be discussing. Now, I am ready to start emerging back out bits at a time.

While I haven’t been active on social media, lots has been happening in my garden.

🥗 Enjoying lots of fresh salads and herbs. Making homemade vinaigrettes with fresh herbs has been ahh-mazing
🥘 Enjoyed asparagus a variety of ways.
🫛 Peas are blooming and we should be harvesting soon
🍓Picking fresh, sun-warmed strawberries daily.
🧄 Garlic looks like it’s coming along nicely
🍑 Added a Contender Peach, Red June Plum and a Flavor Gr***de Pluot to our tree collection.
🌿Been harvesting and drying herbs and chamomile. 🪻Made beautiful purple violet syrup.
🫙Fermenting some chive blossoms in vinegar to use in homemade salad dressings.
🐣 Successfully tricked a mama hen into raising 4 chicks that weren’t hers
👩‍🌾 Been keeping up with a few clients garden builds and planting plans enjoying their progress

Side story of garden struggle:

Last year, I became a chicken mama. Well, my ladies eventually discovered my garden and thought it was their personal all-you-can-eat buffet last year and again this spring. I did what I could to keep them out with what I had on hand. Between dog, wind and wings, they intermittently would get in my temporary make shift fence and wreak havoc on my harvest. They destroyed most of my spring crops this year and I replanted not once but twice… 😔

Well, we officially finished up a 6’ fence - thank you hubby!! I loved having an open concept garden for easy wandering and plucking (especially with kiddos). I successfully kept rabbits and deer out with planting stinky plants on the edges but chickens are a different beast. I will miss the open concept but happy to let my ladies free range again (and not have episodes of high blood pressure and tears 😅).

So hi again! 👋 Would love to hear what you’ve been up to in your gardens - highs and lows! 💪🏼

🤩 My full podcast interview with Talk Talk Midland w/ Logan Richetti dropped this morning 👩‍🌾 I obviously love talking about gardening and am so happy to spread this joy with others.

Love his sense of humor! Use code BYEBYEBONNIE and stock up on those bean seeds 🫘

Also - I recommend direct sowing beans in the soil. It’s tempting to buy plants but beans grow so fast and like their roots not bothered much. Use the extra funds towards heirlooms, good quality compost, or worm castings 😉

Looks like just a bowl of chili, right? To me, it is connection, memories, and love.

🍅Tomatoes are all from my garden last summer which many started from seeds my daughter help start
🦌Venison from deer my kiddos got to track in the woods with us and the stories around the harvest
🧄 Garlic I planted in the fall in of 2024
🪏 Chives that I planted when we moved into our home and even seasoned in with chive flower salt
🌸 Violets my daughter picked in the yard
🧂 Herbs from the garden to season the venison sausage
🍞 Served with fresh, homemade sourdough

It’s so hard to put into words the satisfaction and fulfillment I experience when serving food with a story, a purpose, and love. This didn’t happen over night. It was learning one small skill at a time, mastering it, and then learning to integrate it into the rhythms of life. I laugh thinking about the 1st time I pressure canned salmon - it was an all day affair of anxiety and fear. Now I can throw my canner on the stove in the midst of cooking dinner, changing laundry and chasing kids.

I hear it often that it is overwhelming to start or don’t know where to begin learning it all. Start small, start simple. I encourage you to try to grow or harvest something new this year. Heck, just making a simple goal of spending more at the farmers market than the grocery store can be all the shift you need. Learn a new skill whether it is how to cook it, preserve it, or grow it. What I do didn’t happen overnight.

It doesn’t have to be complex. Here are some ideas:
🍓 Take a family trip to pick strawberries this summer and make a big batch of jam
🌱 Start an herb pot on your back porch and learn new recipes cooking with fresh herbs
🍕 Grow a “Pizza Garden” with tomatoes, basil, oregano and make a fresh pizza together with friends or family
🫐 Go pick blueberries and freeze the extra. Pull them out as needed for oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, and baked goods.
🍹 Make a “Cocktail Garden” with mint, sweet basil, rosemary, lavender, and lemon balm and learn some new recipes to enjoy

Just start.

💡 What ideas resonated with you or what others would you contribute to someone new?

Is “Thankful Tuesday” a thing?! 🤔 Over the last four weeks, my posts have reached more than 120,000 views, and honestly, the numbers aren’t what matter most. What lights me up is knowing this reach is connecting with families who want to grow their own food but feel intimidated to start. If that’s you, you’re not alone, and you absolutely can do this! 💪🏼 There’s something so special about harvesting from your backyard, it’s better for your health, kinder to the planet, and just feels so good. Thank you, thank you for “growing” with me! 👩‍🌾
