With soaring housing costs and a massive shortfall, we’re facing a crisis that affects every aspect of daily life; health, opportunity, climate resilience. This isn’t just a building problem, it’s a systems problem. Outdated zoning, slow permitting, rising costs, and political gridlock all stand in the way.

Today’s housing crisis is too big to be solved one boutique project at a time. We need scalable strategies. To create real solutions, planners, builders, designers, and civic leaders must come together to rethink how we build, where we build, and who we build for.

We need to adapt to changing needs; zoning reform, streamlined permitting, and new housing models like multifamily developments and missing middle housing. This takes more than good design, it takes collaboration, leadership, and a shared commitment to building a future where every community can thrive.

Let’s stop working in silos. Let’s lead together. When we align design with policy, equity, and action, we don’t just build housing... we build possibility.

GREEN LIVING 🍀
Green roofs are transforming architecture by enhancing sustainability and beauty. These eco-friendly designs reduce energy costs, improve air quality, and provide natural insulation against heat. They also help manage stormwater, preventing flooding by absorbing rainwater, and reduce noise pollution by acting as sound barriers. Plus, they create vital green spaces in urban areas, promoting biodiversity.

Green roofs also increase property values and provide opportunities for rooftop gardens, improving mental health and community well-being.

Last week, Ellen had the privilege of speaking at the CEMEX USA Building Change Together panel discussion! Topics included exploring forward-thinking ideas on how we can design and build more sustainably. By focusing on creating resilient communities and sustainable buildings, the panel emphasized the importance of rethinking our construction methods across the entire value chain. From concept to completion, meaningful change is possible when we work together!

Big news for California’s affordable housing efforts! SB 4 is now law, allowing faith-based organizations & non-profit colleges to build affordable homes on their land. This bill streamlines the process, overrides local zoning barriers, and ensures construction workers receive fair wages & benefits. Plus, homes built will remain affordable for decades!

Let’s celebrate this win for housing equity and a stronger, more affordable future for Santa Barbara... and all Californians!
