From the moment I arrived in Santa Barbara, the overwhelming sentiment from everyone we met was ‘this is the most difficult city if you want to renovate or build; it’s expensive and takes forever’. As an architect, I was deflated. I not only had to know why, but have spent months trying to understand the process by watching every ‘episode’ of the Single Family Design Board recorded on local television and reruns in perpetuity on YouTube.
Today, I am really proud to be part of the team that put together a survey that will be distributed to every architect, builder, realtor, homeowner, etc. that submitted for a single family residential design review in the last three years. There is a shining light at the City of Santa Barbara; Ellen Kokinda, Design Review Supervisor and her team took this grassroots movement to next level distribution and will present results that will lead to positive change. Encouraged by the City of Santa Barabara good neighbor rules, we engaged in unique experience to present ‘Reimagine Roble’ project to our adjacent Riviera neighbors. The new design received rave reviews; but the impending construction process not so much… No one looks forward to that short-lived part, but after almost fifty years with no improvements and deferred maintenance inside and out; the only choice remains to wield the wrecking hammer 🔨 and fix this mess🪄🏚️❗️

I do not recall ever turning in a drawing set for review to any city and receiving such a cheerful congratulatory reply🎉❗️…feels like I won the lottery today✨ …but actually think it’s more like being a contestant on 🦈 S H A R K T A N K‼️

Geology Sample Day❗️Have to say I am super impressed with the way Ted Smith and his crew unloaded drilling rig in minutes on our steep street with opposing car waiting, safely set up level on driveway slope and took two difficult samples that both ended up in rock just a few feet down. What does that mean❓According to engineer (& 🏄‍♂️) Ted, “The geology on your site is more stable with greater bearing strength. WHEN (not if) the earthquake comes, this site will dissipate earth movement better because of the rock” 😳

📐✖️✏️As an architect, building material sourcing is a favorite part of my job. When I put my interior design hat on; specifying furnishings is just as fun! Michael Iannone; the talent behind Iannone Design : Eco Friendly Modern Furniture, just completed this collaborative piece for me using ♻️ salvaged automotive metal panels from Joel Hester of the The Weldhouse. Each piece of metal was hand selected by Michael and has a unique patina so no two pieces are alike.
