A clean spray needs a clean room.

That's why some pieces come back to our shop in Santa Cruz County instead of getting finished on site. This wood table is getting its topcoat inside our spray booth, filtered air, sealed walls, nothing floating around to land in a wet finish.

What takes the real time isn't the booth, it's everything that happens before the trigger gets pulled. The piece goes up on stands so nothing sits flat while it's wet. Every edge and joint gets checked first. Spray that same piece outside and one gust of wind undoes the coat.

Third generation in this trade, and one thing hasn't changed. Control the environment and the finish takes care of itself.

Protection is the craft.

A coastal home in Santa Cruz County. White walls and ceilings, a wood slat wall floor to ceiling, and a slider that takes up most of the room.

Anybody can roll a wall. What separates a finish like this is the hours nobody photographs. Every slat edge masked off. Every foot of glass papered. The floor covered before a single can gets opened.

I've been in this trade my whole life, third generation of it in my family, and the lesson hasn't changed. The finish is only what's left over once you've protected everything around it properly. You can't add that at the end. You either did it or you didn't.

Repainting a commercial exterior in Santa Cruz County. This one's an occupied medical office, so people are walking in and out all day while we work.

That changes the setup. Cones and tape go out before any ladder does, drop cloths cover the walkway, and the front entrance stays open the whole time. We work it in sections so nobody has to detour around us.

It's slower than a house. You can't tarp off the whole front and just go. But a building like this can't close its doors for a paint job, so that's what you're paying for.

The Role

We're seeking an experienced Journeyman Painter to join our crew. The ideal candidate is skilled in all aspects of painting, understands the value of following professional processes, and takes pride in delivering outstanding results. At Cutting Edge Painting we don't cut corners — we deliver precision, professionalism, and long-lasting finishes.

Responsibilities
Follow company SOPs to ensure consistent quality and efficiency
Prepare surfaces by scraping, sanding, caulking, and priming
Apply paints, stains, and coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment
Perform drywall patching and minor repairs as needed
Properly mask and protect floors, furniture, and fixtures before painting
Adhere to safety guidelines and company protocols
Communicate effectively with clients, teammates, and supervisors
Work efficiently while maintaining high-quality standards
Requirements
4+ years of professional painting experience
Strong knowledge of painting techniques, materials, and tools
Proficient with spray, brush, and roll application across all coating types
Ability to follow SOPs and company quality standards
Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to craftsmanship
Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
Able to lift 50 lbs and work from ladders or scaffolding as needed
OSHA certification preferred, but not required

Front elevation in Santa Cruz County. The wood siding and window trim got refinished with Armstrong-Clark, a penetrating oil.

Oil like that doesn't sit on the surface. It soaks into the board. There's no film on top, which means there's nothing to crack, blister or peel off in sheets a few years out. When it's taken enough sun it just goes lighter.

That changes what maintenance looks like. A finish that peels has to come off before you can recoat, and stripping is the expensive visit. This one gets washed and re-oiled. No stripping, no sanding it back to bare wood.

Downside is you're back out there sooner. Penetrating oil won't hold as long as a film will. And the panels by the door catch more sun than the ones tucked under the window, so they'll fade first and they won't fade evenly.

The grey siding next to it is a different system, so every line where the two meet gets masked and cut by hand.

Covered patio, ceiling and beams. The ceiling went on first, so every beam has to be cut in by hand against a finish that is already done.

That is the slow part of a job like this. A brush line down both sides of every beam, every rafter and every post, and no way to move faster without putting grey on a white ceiling. Most of the day goes into that line, not into coverage.

The handrail and the floor are both new, so both got wrapped and covered before a ladder came anywhere near them. An hour of plastic in the morning beats explaining a drip on new metal in the afternoon.

Good homeowners, letting us take over the patio for a few days.

Cutting in by hand where the stucco meets the roof edge. Exterior repaint,
and this line doesn't get sprayed.

Appreciate the homeowners having us out for it.

Stucco holds a lot of texture, so the brush has to be worked into the
surface instead of dragged across the top of it.

Third generation painting these houses, and the hand work is the part that
hasn't changed.
