From mid-April to mid-May, millions of shorebirds fly north along the Pacific Flyway to summer breeding grounds in the Artic, stopping to rest and refuel along the way.

Within this flyway, the San Francisco Bay serves as a critical stopover for migrating waterfowl. As the largest estuary on the West Coast, there are an abundance of habitat types and food sources for migrating birds. Although 90 percent of the wetlands that originally surrounded the Bay have been developed or degraded, this estuary hosts higher proportions of the total migrating shorebirds on the Pacific coast than any other wetland. More than one million individual shorebirds representing more than 38 species make their way through Bay wetlands every year!

Learn more about essential salt marsh habitats at our 50th Anniversary Bayside Family Festival on April 30th! There will be nature education, a scavenger hunt, food trucks, music and more!

Grading for Bollinger Wetland Mitigation
Our field crew at ECI recently completed a job clearing and grading a site for the Bollinger Wetland Mitigation project. After grading, our crew will install wattles and silt fencing to control erosion before installing California native plants grown at our nursery, Central Coast Wilds! See the picture below of the crew running some serious yellow iron on site. Stay tuned for more updates on this important project!
