Roaches can thrive in the main sewer line system. They are flexible enough to fit through any small cracks or gaps, so your drain lines and pipes provide entry points to your home. Modern plumbing is designed to keep most sewer inhabitant roaches out, but it is definitely not a system without flaws. Cockroaches can enter your home via drains as they are connected directly to the sewage system. Your shower drain, kitchen drain, and floor drain are all easy entry points for these opportunistic, invasive pests. Toilets that are well maintained and functioning are difficult to enter as they are fitted with water traps. Cockroaches prefer dark, quiet places to nestle themselves away in. This is especially true if they hear activity or loud noises, like a human walking or a pet hunting nearby. The cockroaches may be using your drain as a haven to keep themselves safe. The female may lay eggs inside your drains. If the pipes are unused, they will serve as isolated spots with firm walls. These are ideal for planting egg sacs, which can grow undisturbed. In floor drains, the pipes might also be covered in mildew, hair, or other organic waste. This can be a food source for baby roaches. Sometimes sewer scope inspections may not reveal an infestation due to the fact that the light transmitting on the camera might scare the roaches further down the line. Luckily, there are several remedies online that can help prevent this type of infestation.

Rats often live in sewer line systems, where they can travel freely and access shelter, food and water. And we tend to unwittingly attract them by discarding food and fat down drains, significantly increasing the chances of infestation. Rats can cause real problems in sewer systems because their ultra-strong teeth are capable of chewing through concrete and consequently causing considerable structural damage. Sewer line camera inspections can help determine weather or not there are sewer blockages within the system allowing for this.
Rats can move around drains and sewers with exceptional ease. They are amazing swimmers (they can tread water for three days straight!) and have hinged ribs to allow them to fit through the tightest of spaces.

In this video you will see several areas where small roots have penetrated the joints on the sewer line, if left alone these roots will grow larger. Of Course, large roots can cause major issues such as damage to the main sewer line or cause blockages and backups that are a hassle to deal with. I get asked all the time what to do to prevent this from happening. Two easy ways to do this is by either flushing Copper Sulfate or Foaming root killer down thru the line. Copper Sulfate is a natural herbicide that comes in crystal form that once placed into the line will kill off any small root growth. Foaming root killer is a commercial product that once in the line foams up and attaches itself to the roots and begins to dissolve them. These can be applied at the Main line Clean out, or thru the toilet closest to the front of the home. The process should be repeated once to twice a year to help prevent major root issues over the long run. However, If you have a septic tank then please review the labels thoroughly before proceeding.

5 Signs that you may have a Sewer Line issue

Visible backups in your fixtures:
One of the common signs of a broken sewer pipe is the blocked sewage pipe. If you notice that your toilet, sink or tub is clogging quite often, then the problem could be a damaged sewer line. When the sewer pipe is damaged, the soil or tree roots will find their way into it. Then the soil will start building up and form a stubborn clog in the pipe. At some point, the pipe will become blocked. Tree roots can enter the sewer pipe through cracks on the pipe to form a stubborn clog. Because of the presence of water and nutrients, roots grow rapidly, and the result is a clogged sewer line. So, if your sanitary sewer pipe is clogged, that’s a symptom of a damaged or blocked sewer line.

Smelling sewage:
Another common sign of a broken sewer line is the buildup of sewage smell in the house. This is an extremely easy symptom to identify because the smell will be all over the house. However, sometimes the smell concentration will be more in the bathroom since there are many openings. So if the bathroom smells like sewerage, it is a sign that the sewer line is most likely damaged. What happens is that the odor from the sewer does not have another way to escape from but through your bathroom and/or other open points connect to the sewer pipe.

Dark Green grass:
Another symptom of a damaged sewer pipe is patched of dark green grass in your yard. In most cases, damages to the sewer line may have happened far from the house. There are cases when the damages have been identified on the yard. If you notice that there are dark green spots in the grass, it is a sign of a water leak. When the pipes break, the sewer water from the house will start leaking to the surrounding soil. This water is very rich in nutrients. That is why the grass over the damaged spot is usually healthier than the rest of the grass in the yards.

Rat Problems:
Most people may not have realized it, but a rat problem may be a sign of a damaged sewer line. Rats live in sewers where they scavenge for food. So they are also in your sanitary sewer line but cannot move past the drain to access your home. However, if there are cracks in the sewer pipe, an average rat can squeeze itself out through a tiny crack. If you notice an increase in the number of rats in your house or the yard, then you need to check for a damaged sewer line. If not fixed immediately, you might experience a severe rate infestation in your home.

Foundation cracks, sinkholes and settlement:
Foundation cracks, sinkholes and settlement are some extreme signs of a broken or damaged sewer pipe. These problems usually happen when a leaking sewer line goes unnoticed or untreated for a long time. For the wetting of the concrete, a void will be created, and that’s when cracks and sinkholes will start developing.
