The Santa Fe County Office of Emergency Management is urging Santa Fe County residents to prepare for this weekend's storm system.
This system is expected to bring lower than normal temperatures. Many areas within Santa Fe County are to experience below zero temperatures with snow accumulation. Travel during this time is strongly discouraged.
Here are some tips to stay prepared:
Ensure your vehicles gas tanks are full and electric vehicles charged. Keep your electronic devices and cell phones fully charged and have a spare battery/charger.
Ensure you have a back-up heating source, such as a wood stove, or indoor safe heaters (Be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning, do not use outdoor heaters or camping gas lamps inside.)
Ensure you have flashlights with spare batteries. (if you're going to use candles, handle them carefully and do not leave them unattended)
Ensure you have non-perishable food for at least 72 hours and drinking water.
During the nighttime hours or if you're away, drip your indoor water faucets to prevent the water lines from freezing.
Keep extra blankets and jackets available.
If you must travel or are stuck in your vehicle, keep a kit inside your car with extra blankets, jackets, gloves, handwarmers, food, water and a cell phone.
Finally, make your preparations to fit your households needs. Make an emergency plan with relatives and neighbors. Don't forget your pets and bring them inside.
If you experience an emergency, please dial 911.
