This is exactly why we recommend NOT using bleach in HVAC drain lines. The fumes from bleach can become trapped inside the air handler and over time begin attacking the evaporator coil. Once corrosion starts, the coil fins and tubing become brittle, leading to premature coil failure, refrigerant leaks, reduced airflow, and expensive repairs.
In this photo you can clearly see severe corrosion and deterioration on the evaporator coil caused by long-term chemical exposure. The coil fins are literally breaking apart.
