Does the base under your driveway pavement matter?

Yes it does! Before a new driveway, private road, parking lot, or paved surface can be built correctly, the existing surface may need to be removed. Damaged asphalt, unstable materials, poor grading, and drainage problems can all affect the performance of the new pavement if they are not addressed during the preparation phase.

Proper preparation of the base is an important stage of paving projects because it creates a better foundation for your driveway. Removing the old surface lets us see what the factors are underneath, so we can troubleshoot problem areas, resolve drainage issues and other trouble signs, before the new surface is applied.

Demolition and surface removal matters before paving because many paving problems start below the surface. While cracks, potholes, drainage issues, and uneven pavement are visible on top, the real cause may be underneath the existing asphalt paved area.

Paving scammers often advertise on social media platforms like Facebook, Nextdoor, and Craigslist, posing as licensed asphalt contractors. These crews move from neighborhood to neighborhood offering quick driveway repairs, "leftover asphalt" deals, or cash prices that seem too good to pass up.

The problem is that they're often not licensed, insured, or qualified. If you're tempted to hire them, you may discover that after the work is done, their phone number is disconnected and they're nowhere to be found.

Recently, someone posing as a licensed contractor used our paving photos to try to get business on Facebook Marketplace. When we saw his ad and confronted him, he became belligerent. We sincerely hope no homeowner was subjected to his work—or his attitude.

If you see a paving contractor advertising without a CSLB license number, or claiming to be licensed when they are not, you can report illegal advertising directly to the Contractors State License Board. Go to https://cslb.ca.gov/ and search for “Report Illegal Advertising” to get started.
