I used to think a good team just did what I told them.

I was wrong. A visionary's ideas don't mean much without an integrator strong enough to slow them down, push back, and say "not today" when it's needed. I had to learn that the hard way, and it changed how I lead.

💬 If you're the visionary in your business, who's empowered to tell you no?
Tell me in the comments.

I used to think being the visionary meant I was usually right.

That's a dangerous place to lead from.

I could walk into a room, paint the big picture, and just run right over the people trying to build it. I had to learn that a good integrator isn't the one who agrees with everything I say. It's the one who's empowered enough to look at me and say, "we can't do that today."

That pushback isn't a threat to the vision. It's what makes the vision actually happen.

Where in your business do you need someone empowered to tell you "not today"?

Your team isn't listening to your core values. They're watching them.

Every core value you claim gets tested the moment someone on your team is deciding whether to mimic it or ignore it. If it's not something you're actually living, they'll know and they won't align with it.

So before you write the next value on the wall, ask: is this something my people can already see me doing?

Culture isn't a statement. It's a pattern of behavior your team is watching, whether you meant for them to or not.

You can hire for skill all day long. But you can't teach character, and you can't teach motivation. Those either show up in the interview, or they don't.

Here's what I keep coming back to: your core values are only real if your people can point to a moment where they watched you live them out. Not read them. Watched them.

What's a core value your team has actually seen you live, not just say? Drop it in the comments.

We held someone back for 3-4 weeks. That's on us.

Not because he wasn't capable. Because we misread the fit, and it cost him time in his own career path.

Here's the thing about culture: it's not about never making a hiring mistake. It's about what you do when you find one. We didn't change our process. We went back to who we are, owned what we got wrong, and realigned.

That's not weakness. That's what tenured teams are actually built on.

What's your take - how does your team handle owning a hiring miss?

Your "Olympian Level" is your brand.

At some point, you decided you were an Olympian at something.

That's not a compliment. It's a responsibility.

Whatever you're truly excellent at - that's your brand. That's your business. And it doesn't stay that way on its own. It takes continued health, continued learning, continued exposure to new ideas.

There's no negotiating this one. You either keep sharpening the thing you're best at, or you watch it fade.

Growth doesn't stall because of a bad market. It stalls because a founder won't let go.

On this week's episode, Jim Robinson breaks down the hardest part of scaling his company to 18 states: learning that his own need for control was the biggest thing standing in the way.

EOS gave him language for departments and roles, but the real unlock was deciding what to release, and who to trust with it.

Are you hiring "Survivalists" or "Olympians"?

More people isn't the same as more strength.

I've coached business owners who hired 40 people because they were saying yes to every job that came in. Not because those were the right 40 people. Just bodies to cover the work.

That doesn't create gain. It creates pain.

If your team is stressed, sleepless, and stretched thin, the problem usually isn't the workload. It's that you filled seats with survivalists instead of people operating at their Olympian level.

Growth without the right people in the right roles isn't growth. It's a slow leak.

Tim Keck became a cop in 1979. Back then, "mentorship" wasn't even a word people used.

By the time it became a recognized thing, Tim had already lived the difference it made.

Here's what he told me it always comes down to: someone taking an interest in you as a person. Not your title. Not your org chart position. Not what your badge says. You.

That's the whole model. It's simple, and it's rare.

Who took that kind of interest in you early on? Tell me about them below.

You can admire John Wayne. You can't try to be Dirty Harry.

That's the line Tim Keck drew when we talked about mentorship, and it stuck with me.

We all pick heroes. We all pick mentors. But who you choose to model yourself after matters more than most people admit. Get it wrong, and it doesn't just slow you down... it can actively work against you.

Who's been that model for you - in leadership or otherwise?
I'd love to hear it in the comments.
