This customer came in and stated he had his cushions done by one of our "competitors" here in town and lasted only 1 year. She wanted a long lasting repair and needed options.

“For that price, I could buy new.”

And you’re right — you absolutely could.
But when that phrase is said, it often unintentionally compares handcrafted work to mass-produced furniture, and those two things aren’t built on the same foundation.

What many people don’t see is this:
Upholstery is skilled labor. It’s structural knowledge, material science, precision, patience, and years—sometimes decades—of experience. Every seam, every spring, every layer is done by hand, one piece at a time.

When someone says “for that, I could buy new,” it quietly devalues the artist behind the work. And yes—if we’re being honest—it can crush our souls a bit. Because it reduces craftsmanship to a price comparison instead of recognizing it as a profession.

There will always be cheaper, faster, disposable options.
