🇺🇸 SEPTEMBER 2 — REMEMBERING THE END OF WORLD WAR II
81 YEARS AGO, THE GUNS FELL SILENT.
On September 2, 1945, representatives of Imperial Japan formally signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
After nearly six years of global war—and almost four years of American involvement in the conflict—World War II was officially over.
For millions of Americans, it was a moment they had prayed would come.
Families could finally begin looking toward the return of sons, daughters, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters who had served around the world.
Factories that had supported an unprecedented wartime effort could begin returning to peacetime.
Communities could begin looking toward a future that, only months earlier, had remained uncertain.
But victory carried an enormous cost.
More than 400,000 American service members never returned home.
Behind that number were families who would never again hear a familiar voice at the dinner table.
Parents who lost children.
Children who grew up without parents.
Spouses whose futures changed forever.
And countless Veterans who returned home carrying memories of experiences that would remain with them for the rest of their lives.
SO TODAY IS MORE THAN AN ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY.
It is a day to remember service.
Sacrifice.
Courage.
Duty.
And an extraordinary generation of Americans—both in uniform and on the home front—who answered when their country needed them.
On the deck of the USS Missouri that morning, General Douglas MacArthur spoke words that captured the hope of a world exhausted by war:
“Today the guns are silent.”
Those words represented something people across the world had desperately waited years to hear.
81 YEARS LATER, WE REMEMBER.
We remember those who fought.
We remember those who served behind the lines.
We remember the prisoners of war who endured unimaginable hardship.
We remember the families who waited at home.
We remember the Americans who worked in factories, shipyards, farms and communities to support the war effort.
And above all, we remember those who never came home.
🇺🇸 May we never forget the price that was paid for the peace that followed.
