Back-to-school season is underway across Florida, and as students and teachers settle into a new year, we’ve been thinking about the schools and campuses we’ve had the privilege to help shape.

A little FBA history: education has been part of our story from the very beginning. In 1994, Rick Fawley and Michael Bryant joined forces to pursue the design of a Manatee County school. They won the project, launched Fawley Bryant Architecture, and the rest became part of our own curriculum.

More than 30 years later, that work has grown into a long list of learning environments designed to serve students, educators, and communities day after day, year after year, both public and private. Here are some oldies but goodies — design serving the gulf coast school districts for the past three decades.

Yesterday, we opened our doors to the Manatee Chamber of Commerce Manatee Young Professionals (MYP) for a behind-the-scenes happy hour and design charrette.

We shared a look at projects from our past, present, and future, giving guests a glimpse into the expansive design process behind the spaces we help bring to life. For some, it was a first look at how architecture really works. For others who partner with architects in their work, we hope it added a little more depth to showcase what happens on our side of the table.

The process, the mindset, the collaboration, and the importance of alignment in design conversations along the way.

At FBA, we believe civic participation matters at every level. That means encouraging our team to stay active, involved, and informed — and giving them the space to step away to cast their votes and make their voices heard.

Great communities do not happen by accident. They are shaped by people who show up.

You'd be hard-pressed to find someone willing to describe architecture as "simple."

It is conversation, visioning, problem-solving, and a fair amount of “Which option is best, and why?” Behind every project is a mix of psychology, operations, art, design, project management, math, marketing, and the ability to translate a client’s needs into a space that performs.

Our work goes far beyond the blueprints. We help develop and build a vision from the ground up.

We’re excited to kick off a new project with the The City of Daytona Beach Government in partnership with Castle Bay Design + Studio.

Derbyshire Park, at 32 acres, is the City’s largest and most popular outdoor sports facility, and this next chapter is all about expanding what it can offer. With the goal of increasing overall park usage by 50% across all user groups, Phase 1 will turn the program into a clear, directional master plan vision for the future of the park.

We’re no strangers to work beyond our own backyard. This project stretches that reach even further, bringing our sports and recreation design expertise further North along the East coast of Florida.

When the work is creative, collaborative, and full of good people solving good problems, the process becomes part of the fun. Ideas get better, conversations get livelier, and the work feels a little less like work. “Work hard and play hard.” In the right environment, there’s no need to separate them.

Last week, students from Suncoast Technical College’s Summer CAD Program visited FBA for a closer look at how design moves from screen to site.

The students toured our office before heading to the City Park jobsite, connecting what they are learning in CAD and Revit to real-world architectural design, construction coordination, and field problem-solving.

We were proud to sponsor this week's Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance monthly luncheon. It was a privilege to hear from Carlos Buqueras of SeaPort Manatee and Paul Hoback of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ).
