Did you know your home is inundated with vampires? Energy vampires – that is. Otherwise known as a “phantom load”. On average a typical home lives with 20 vampires and those energy suckers can add approximately $200 to your energy bill each year. Most people don’t realize that although many of your appliances and electronics in your home may be turned off they are still using energy. That’s because the “off” button doesn’t really mean "off” these days; instead it means “standby”.

Here are some of the top energy suckers:
• TV’s, VCR’s, Audio/Gaming Equipment
• Anything with a continuous display (i.e. Clocks, Microwaves)
• Equipment with external power supply (i.e. Computers, Printers, Cell phone chargers, iPod chargers)

So…you may be asking yourself, “How do I rid my home of these energy killers?" Here are a few suggestions:

1) Kill vampires by using a power strip (sold at hardware stores). Plug all components of a computer or home entertainment system into the power strip and turn off all the components with a switch of a button. Anything plugged in is now truly turned “off”.

2) Unplug the vampires. When your new iphone is done charging, unplug the charger. Simple as that!

3) Buy energy efficient appliances bearing the Energy Star label. At least if they do have to suck energy it will be much less. Find a list of products at: http://www.energystar.gov/

ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency.

Hardesty Electric Service has been contracted to illuminate this 70-foot tall, bold and bright red steel sculpture named "Complexus". Complexus was the star of the show at this year’s Sarasota Season of Sculpture’s outdoor sculpture exhibition. As that exhibition drew to a close, the Sarasota P***c Art Fund launched a campaign to purchase this heroic piece of art. The sculpture is located at the corner of U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue, in front of One Sarasota Tower, in downtown Sarasota.

Saving on energy is a hot topic these days...chances are you have already converted your incandescent light bulbs to the new CFLs. That is a great way to save a little on energy bills even though they cost a little more at the register. We would actually like to suggest using LED lights. LED lights are more desirable because of their low energy usage, low heat emission, and low impact on the environment when discarded. They cost a little more at the cash register, but are worth it since they have an even longer life expectancy, 50,000 hours vs. 8,000 for CFLs. With no mercury inside of LEDs that means less of a hassle for you should one break. Not to mention, LEDs are actually recyclable in many cities. So much easier than CFLs to dispose of since CFLs are categorized as hazardous waste and should never be tossed in with regular trash. If you can't quite swing making the change all at once, start with hard to reach areas such as the foyer and high-volume areas such as the kitchen and bathrooms.
