The Pine Bark Beetle has been rapidly spreading throughout our region, leading to an increasing number of infestations in the Sarasota County area. If you have Slash Pine trees, it’s important to be informed. Learn more about the Pine Bark Beetle below.

What is the Pine Bark Beetle?

This beetle burrows into the trunks of Slash Pine trees, laying its eggs. The larvae then feed on the sapwood, causing extensive damage. Once mature, the beetles relocate within the trunk or spread to nearby Slash Pine trees. This process results in severe tree damage, rapid decline, and eventual Pine tree death.

How can I identify a Pine Bark Beetle infestation?

Signs of a Pine Bark Beetle infestation include a swift change in needle color and loss of needles. The needles transition from deep green to copper-orange rapidly. Inspecting the trunk (within the first 8ft of the trunk), you’ll notice tan-brown sawdust near the burrow holes and resin oozing from the trunk. In some cases, these burrows may resemble drill holes with sawdust accumulation below.

What should I do if I suspect an infestation?

Time is of the essence. There’s a crucial window for saving affected trees. Contact an ISA Certified Arborist promptly for a thorough tree inspection. Our team has successfully diagnosed and rescued numerous Slash Pine trees using systemic injections over the years. If any of the aforementioned signs are present, reach out to us immediately to arrange an inspection of your Slash Pine tree(s). Your prompt action can make a significant difference.

Day in and day out, as we drive through our communities neighborhoods, we see so many trees that aren't being taken care of properly. Improper pruning is one of the biggest issues we see and one of the leading reasons for tree failure. For this upcoming storm season, it is best to be proactive and have your trees trimmed properly, to improve structure, and to mitigate any potential issues before they become problems. It is important to realize that different trees require different types of pruning and that all trees aren't pruned the same. Check out our website as we have a section there that goes over improper pruning.

Learn about the proper pruning methods that we apply at Sarasota Tree Service. Keep your trees safe from improper tree pruning services!
