If it feels like the yellowjackets got meaner this month, you're not imagining it.
By early fall their colonies have peaked and their usual food sources are drying up. That's when they start showing up where people are — around trash cans, at tailgates, on the picnic table, in the soda can you set down five minutes ago.
They're also more defensive this time of year, and the nests are at their largest. Many are in the ground or inside a wall void, which means people find them by accident, usually with a mower or a footstep.
