Did anyone else do Christmas Shopping this a.m.? I am happy to say that I only have two people left to buy for, and then the wrapping begins. As my gift shopping comes to a close, I am now focused on my Christmas Day menu. After choosing my Christmas Eve menu based on yesterday's selections, I have to say my work is cut out for me.

For a few years now, I have wanted to do something out of the ordinary for Christmas dinner. I've wanted to pay homage to my Italian roots and do an Italian menu. When I say Italian menu, I'm not just talking about spaghetti and meatballs. I'm talking about a full 6-course dining experience.

I once visited a client in NYC and was taken to an authentic Italian restaurant in Queens, NY. I hadn't eaten all day and was ready for dinner, to say the least. My experience with dinner is typically the main course. In our house, we're lucky if dinner is anything other than a bag of Bird's Eye Pasta and Rotisserie chicken, which I love, thank you very much. But I often think about this experience in Queens, and I want to share it with you to set the scene.

We sat down at a table with olives, bread, and wine. I, a woman with no shame in grabbing the bread basket and wine, went to town. I probably ate an entire loaf of bread, to be honest, and soon to follow was soup and salad. As I mentioned earlier, I was starved, so I ate both the soup and salad until nothing was left but empty bowls. At this point, like every other girl on the planet. I was full. What happened next is somewhat hazy. Be it the food coma or the three (to five) bottles of wine that circled the table, all I know is that the food didn't stop coming.

Next, we were served a seafood dish. It was plated with fish, vegetables, and risotto. At this point, I was begging to be rolled out the door, but it didn't stop there. My stomach was bursting as the plates were cleared, and a red sauce dish came. I looked at my clients and said, "Are you serious?" Which was then answered by a white sauce dish. At this point, I said, you guys, "I can't do this," but I did. I ate as much as I could to the point of nausea. As the plates cleared and we sat there discussing fun conversation, dessert showed up with coffee.

When I tell you I've never turned down food. I mean, I have NEVER turned down food until this point in my life. I politely took a few bites and then called it. I went through this entire story because it is one of my most special memories. My clients from Queens are first-generation Italian and shared their culture with me, a fourth-generation gal. I had these experiences when I was a child visiting my great-grandparent's house, but this was my first time as an adult feeling so close to my family, and that to me s what Christmas is all about. The gift of food, fun, family, and memories.

This year, I plan to remake this memory with my family by creating a similar menu for all. I have provided the menu and recipes below for you to enjoy, should you choose to create this experience. As I depart from this blog for the Holiday, I want to wish everyone the beautiful gift of food, fun, family, and memories. Happy Holidays to you all from all of us at TDC Custom Homes, and as always, if you choose to make the recipes below, let us know!

The countdown to Christmas Day continues. We are only 3 days away from a morning filled with love, cheer, and the warmth of family around a tree. One non-negotiable in our home this year is our Christmas morning brunch menu. My husband has informed me that sweet rolls are a must, along with mimosas and biscuits and gravy. There are two adults and one baby in this household, so this is far too much food. However, Christmas morning in our home is filled with food, laughter, and Christmas tradition, so, I will prepare his menu happily in support of his Holiday wishes.

Today's blog will highlight some recipes for Christmas Eve, specifically. I'll be sure to include something for everyone so that you can appease all family members and Christmas guests who may be joining you this year.

Christmas Eve Appetizers
Growing up, my family always went to 5 p.m. church on Christmas Eve. We would return home to a grazing table of different appetizers. The spread was a hodgepodge of homemade and store-bought items to compliment every pallet in the home.

Our Christmas even menu included wings from Buffalo Wild Wings, shrimp cocktail, hot sausage and cheese on rye bread squares, a veggie tray, and a fruit and cheese tray. None of this goes together or makes sense, but it's what we did, and it's how I remember my childhood. Below are some of the best Christmas Eve appetizers you can serve before or after your Christmas service if you attend the night before. These are also great for Holiday get-togethers if you will be entertaining.

I will be patiently waiting to hear about the appetizers you were inspired to make from the list above. I think I will be making a few myself. The ones that are particularly standing out to me include the pull-apart garlic pizza bread, the cheese balls, and the sweet potato bites!

Next, let's discuss the Christmas Eve dinner menu. If you are someone who likes to keep it traditional with a table runner accented by every food under the sun, then this portion is for you! Below is a sample menu of Christmas Eve dinner. Feel free to use this as a checklist for your menu, and incorporate any recipes you see fit.

Did you know that Edwin has a collection of unbelievable tiny houses in his portfolio? One area of expertise that is never compromised with TDC is details, and this is why Edwin's tiny houses are par none. It actually surprises me that I haven't mentioned them until now.

I recently visited one of his tiny homes and thought to myself, "How does one decorate a small space for the Holidays?" This question inspired me to go down the rabbit hole known as Pinterest, as you do, and I landed on some pretty surprising ideas. I've chosen to cover this topic on today's blog because whether you are decorating a multi-million dollar custom home or the perfect tiny house, these ideas are one-size-fits-all.

The first item that fits in any home is a Christmas tree. Nothing says "holiday spirit" quite like bringing an evergreen into your home. What's exciting about Christmas trees lately is the options that they come in. You could always go the traditional route and buy one from your local tree farm or church, but the fake ones are just as special. I saw a large variety of trees for 50% off at the store AtHome. They come in various sizes, shapes, colors, pre-lit, fake snow dusting, ones with acorns and fake fruit, and just plain. If you want a tree and you're in a tiny home, look options at stores like TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and At Home.

Next, you'll want to make sure you have a tree skirt. The cool thing about tree skirts is the abundance of options. Truthfully, in a pinch, you could arrange your favorite blanket into a tree skirt.

We could move on to the obvious decor of ornaments and tree toppers, but those are a given following your tree and tree skirts assembly. One thing you won't want to forget is stockings. I have seen tiny houses with stockings hanging from the lofted bed area, and I have seen stockings stuck plainly to the wall. Either way, these won't take up too much space and are perfect for holiday wall decor.

This next suggestion is great for indoor and outdoor options. Garland. I believe last year we talked about how garland was making a come back and weel, it's still here. I recently came across a tiny home where garland was used to compliment the outdoor Christmas lights. The tiny home was situated in the woods, and the photo was complete with Christmas snow, so obviously, the garland was a PERFECT touch. I feel this photo is famous, so type in "Tiny house Christmas decor" in your Google search, and it should be one of the top images.

Our last decor suggestion that is one-size-fits-all is tinsel. Tinsel will forever remind me of how I would binge-watch "The Santa Claus" with Tim Allen. If you don't remember that movie, beware of the spoiler ahead. In that movie, Tim Allen becomes Santa Claus, and the feds arrest him because they think he's mentally insane, fair enough. The truth, though, is that he IS Santa and not insane. When his elves from the North Pole come to rescue him, they break him out of jail using tinsel. And for that reason, tinsel will forever be a holiday MVP.

My suggestion for the tinsel is to hold a bunch of it in your hands and do 3 to 5 spins while releasing it all over the room and leaving it where it lies because tinsel is a mess and will end up everywhere anyways.

I hope that last bit made you giggle. I did as I wrote it :). Please be sure to let me know if you throw tinsel all over your house and if you're really brave. I dare you to video yourself doing it and put it on TikTok. Honestly, it's a good idea, and you'll probably go viral.

Happy December to you all! We have made it to month twelve of 2020. Can you believe it? Like many of you, I started celebrating the Holiday season on November 1st. It didn't feel all the way right at that time, but it does now!

Did you all have a good Thanksgiving? Did you try any new recipes? For me, it was the first year where I carried a significant load on the cooking front, and I would say ...... I learned a lot. My takeaways include, always use unsalted butter, keeping cookies fresh only requires one slice of bread (not four), and always sign up to provide the dishes you can make ahead of time!

The recipes I used were phenomenal. I, on the other hand, have a ways to go in the kitchen. Regardless, I plan to give them another shot at Christmas and feel they are solid choices for your Christmas feasts as well. Below are the easy and delicious recipes I choose to bring to Thanksgiving and will most likely be making again on Christmas! If you end up giving these a try, let me know!

For today's blog, I am sharing one of my favorite outdoor holiday decorating hacks. It's something I stumbled upon a few years ago and have continued every year since. If you're anything like me, you probably love looking at the Holiday decor sections of Home Good's, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Walmart, Target, and insert any other major retailers here. I. however, have cracked the code to find amazing Holiday decor without breaking the bank or even putting a dent in it.

I was inspired by the trees on each side of my garage. To put it simply, they're Christmas trees, and this gets me super excited on December first. A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to decorate them as outdoor Christmas trees. Upon this thought, I hesitated. How can I make these look like Christmas trees without ruining the decor if we get bad weather? I envisioned large bows, vintage bulb lights, and a beautiful red ribbon.

Once I started hunting, all I could think was, "there is no way I would even pay the discounted price on decor that will most likely be ruined by wind and rain." I let the vision go, and a few days later, while running some Holiday errands, I stumbled into a Goodwill. I was donating some Holiday cheer to the store when I saw an entire section of Christmas decor. Better yet, a lot of the decor was OUTDOOR decor! I went over and grabbed a few items, looked at the price tag, and saw that the prices were slightly higher than I imagined. Although higher, the prices were still quite a bit lower than other discounted retailers.

I decided to make the purchases and make my outdoor Christmas tree visions a reality. As I was checking out, I received a total that was far less than the ticketed price. I was confused. On the items that said $5, I was only paying $1. On the item that was listed as $10, I was only paying $2? It hit me, these were brand new, never used items that had been donated to Goodwill, and I saw the original price, not the Goodwill price! When I thought I was getting a good deal for $20 on my outdoor decor, I got an even better deal for $10.

So there you have it, folks. If you are looking for affordable Holiday decor without breaking the bank, check out the Holiday section on Goodwill!

This great variation of the traditional green bean casserole is topped with French fried onions and Cheddar cheese.

Can you guys believe that in 5 weeks, the year will be over? Although, as a collective, we have been through a lot this year. It feels like the year has completely flown by. As much as we would like to think of this year as a wash, we are headed into the best season. The Holiday season! This is the time of the year, where we write about gifts, food, decor, and family fun. I'm excited to start writing on these topics because the Holiday season's spirit provides hope. Our hope for all of you is that everyone can end this year on a high, surrounded by love and light.

With two weeks to prepare, I want to give you ample time to get your decor ready for Thanksgiving. Today's blog is going to focus on the Thanksgiving centerpieces. The truth is, we are all guilty (at least I am) of waiting until the last minute to put together Thanksgiving decor. It is usually a miracle if I am not running to the store the night before for last-minute items I've forgotten, and by 'the night before' I mean, the morning of! This year, I want to do better, and for those of you who identify with what I wrote above, I'm going to help you do better too!

You may have never done a Thanksgiving centerpiece for your table, but can you think of a better year to start! If you're thinking "yes," then humor me and pretend that this IS the perfect year to start. Below, I will help you with easy DIY centerpieces to make 2020 Thanksgiving a beautiful memory for your guests.

"Beauty on a Budget"
The first centerpiece worth noting comes from the Thanksgiving centerpieces on HGTV.com. This one can be assembled for $20 and requires minimal effort!

"For the cranberry-filled vase, we employed an easy trick: Place a smaller dollar-store glass cylinder inside a larger one, then pour fresh cranberries into the gap between the two vases. For the flowers, we mixed a few grocery-store blooms with dried millet and faux dill blooms. Silk and dried flowers can be used year after year, making them a great way to stretch your holiday decorating budget." - H. Camille Smith
https://www.hgtv.com/lifestyle/entertaining/30-thanksgiving-centerpieces-pictures

The next suggestion is to decorate with your dessert. This is a dream come true for me because dessert is my favorite part! H. Camille Smith suggests to "try a fresh take on Thanksgiving's traditional cornucopia by serving up healthy and not-so-healthy bite-size treats on a series of stacked servers. No need for guests to leave the table to grab dessert at the end of the feast. The perfect ending to their meal is within easy reach."
https://www.hgtv.com/lifestyle/entertaining/30-thanksgiving-centerpieces-pictures

Our last suggestion is for those of you who are looking for an asymmetrical approach. "While a perfectly balanced, symmetrical table is certainly beautiful, asymmetry lends a more dynamic look. For our centerpiece, we created a layered effect that incorporates the romance of candlelight with the rustic textures of wood and lots of fall color via an assortment of fresh and faux gourds, silk sunflowers and dried seed pods." This suggestion also comes from H. Camille Smith
https://www.hgtv.com/lifestyle/entertaining/30-thanksgiving-centerpieces-pictures

Whether your taste in centerpieces is traditional or modern, formal or fuss-free, we've got you covered with 60 DIY ideas for the star of your Thanksgiving table.

11/03/2020

As badly as I want to open this blog with comments on the weather, I mustn't. My comments on the weather take up space on our blog almost every week. Who could blame me? We, and I speak on behalf of all Savannah natives reading this blog, are so lucky to have clear blue skies in November. Did you know it snowed in the midwest over the weekend? Could you imagine? If you've never visited there, allow me to burst your bubble with this anecdote of midwest fall knowledge. The midwest may provide beautiful fall colors amongst the trees, but a dismal grey sky canvas backs those colors. I often hear transplants in Savannah mention how they miss the colors of fall. I get it. The colors are beautiful and something to be missed, the grey sky, however, is not.

All this talk about colors has me thinking about color trends. Believe it or not, designers and decorators are already forecasting color trends of 20201. I recently looked into this because my first thought was, "how do you know this in November?" Which was followed by my second thought, "2021 is literally 2 months away." My mind is blown.

Even as I wrote that statement out to live in this blog forever, my brain simply cannot understand how we went from January, February, March, a whole lot of nonsense, October, and now November. Would you believe that I celebrated a milestone birthday this year? Like so many others who celebrated milestone birthdays, I grieved. In fact, I am still grieving, but absolutely none of this has anything to do with color trends. So, back to the topic at hand, which is, in fact, color trends of 2021.

For those of you wondering why I chose this blog topic. I chose this for everyone who didn't get their opportunity to shine in 2020. A lot of us came into the year with hearts exploding with opportunity. We saw the chance for growth and progress and inspiration. This all came crashing down with the events we have lived through. We owe those beaming hearts the opportunity to express freely and loudly as we leave this year behind. So as we join together in these next two months, let's do it with style and set the tone for 2021 in vibrant color.

So here we go. The color trends of 2021 are as followed:

It's a new week, and we have decided to start a new blog segment. Today will mark our first "shop this" by TDC Custom Homes. Once a month, we will breakdown some of our favorite products from vendors in the area. The "shop this" by TDC Custom Homes list will be inspired by seasonal trends, price points, and supporting local businesses in Savannah.

We kick off our first "shop this" list with a little structure, and we mean that literally. For anyone looking for building supplies, we suggest you check out Guerry Lumber We recently worked on a project with Guerry Lumber, and the home turned out beautiful. If you visit the website below, you will learn that "Guerry Lumber is a family-owned building supply company located on a 6-acre site in Midtown Savannah. They serve commercial general contractors, home builders, professional remodelers, specialty contractors, and homeowners with a wide selection of lumber, plywood, moulding, decking, railing, windows, doors, custom millwork, and more." If you are looking to take on any home project, we suggest you stop by Guerry Lumber and see how they can assist you!

Our next "shop this" vendor is 24e Design Co. We have chosen this store because it is truly one of a kind. Like the city it's founded in, there is no other place like it. When you visit the website, you'll learn that "In 2000, Ruel Joyner put his thumbprint on the family business designing and curating originally designed furnishings and objects from all over the globe. Over the years, he and his wife Delaine molded 24e Design into an open creative space where people can be inspired by designs and take part in an experience that is travelled." If you haven't visited 24e, you must do so the next time you find yourself on Broughton Street.

A charming corner of the store offers wares and gifts just for children, and an expansive section of books and magazines is devoted to art, design, food, and travel. Tables are set with all the accoutrements for the perfect dinner party, while daybeds are dressed in layers of luxurious linens and throw pillows."
