π Understanding Heat Stress on Your Lawn πΏ
As summer temperatures rise, our beautiful lawns can suffer from heat stress. Here's what happens to your turf during each stage of heat stress, what it looks like, and how you can remedy it to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant.
Stages of Heat Stress & Symptoms:
Early Heat Stress:
Symptoms: Grass blades start to wilt and lose their vibrant color, appearing dull and slightly bluish-gray.
Remedy: Water deeply and constantly. Aim for 1-1.5 inches of water per week, preferably early in the morning every other day to minimize evaporation.
Moderate Heat Stress:
Symptoms: Grass blades curl and footprints remain visible on the lawn for longer. You'll notice patches of brown, dry grass.
Remedy: Increase watering frequency while ensuring deep soaking. Consider applying a light fertilizer with slow-release nitrogen to support recovery.
Severe Heat Stress:
Symptoms: Large brown patches spread across the lawn, and grass may become brittle and die in severe cases.
Remedy: Watering alone may not suffice. Aerate the soil to improve water infiltration and reduce compactionin the fall. Apply a high-quality organic mulch to retain soil moisture.
General Tips to Combat Heat Stress:
Mow High: Keep your mower blades high (3-4 inches) to reduce stress and promote deeper root growth.
Avoid Fertilizing in Extreme Heat: Fertilize in the cooler months of spring and fall to prevent additional stress during peak summer heat.
Use Drought-Resistant Grass Types: Consider incorporating turf type tall fescue, known for its heat and drought resistance.
