For centuries, most fireplaces were terrible at their one job: making heat. But one man fixed that in the 1790s.

Count Rumford redesigned the fireplace to be taller and shallower with angled sides that actually radiate warmth into the room instead of sending it up the chimney. His design was so good that homes like Monticello were retrofitted with them — and the principles still shape how we build for warmth today. While fireplaces are a little more modern and efficient today (especially electric ones with forced air features), we're sure thankful for the Count's initial discovery!
