Hi Friends,
There's a lot of conversation right now about AI replacing bookkeepers.
I actually think AI and automation will replace some of the work bookkeepers have traditionally been paid to do.
If your value is primarily entering and categorizing transactions, technology is getting better and better at doing that.
But that doesn't mean there isn't a need for a skilled bookkeeper.
It changes what makes the bookkeeper valuable.
Think about a roofing company using AccuLynx and QuickBooks Online.
AccuLynx can help automate the flow of information from the roofing company's CRM into QBO. QuickBooks can recognize transactions, suggest categories and find possible matches.
That's helpful.
But technology doesn't eliminate the need to understand what actually happened.
Did that deposit come from a customer payment already recorded in QBO?
Is it income, a transfer, loan proceeds or an owner contribution?
Should that bank-feed transaction be added—or matched to something that's already there?
Does the job income in QBO agree with what happened in the CRM?
Are the Balance Sheet accounts reconciled?
Does the job profitability make sense?
Those questions require more than data entry.
They require accounting knowledge, roofing knowledge and problem-solving skills.
That's where I believe the opportunity is for bookkeepers.
Don't fight AI.
Learn how to use it.
Let AI and automation help with the work they're good at. Then develop the skills that allow you to review the information, recognize when something doesn't make sense, solve the problem and communicate what the numbers mean to the business owner.
AI identifies and assists.
The bookkeeper investigates and decides.
Reconciliation verifies.
The more bookkeeping becomes automated, the more important it will be to understand the business behind the transactions.
Don't build your bookkeeping business around the part of bookkeeping that's easiest to automate.
