Hi Friends,

There's a lot of conversation right now about AI replacing bookkeepers.

I actually think AI and automation will replace some of the work bookkeepers have traditionally been paid to do.

If your value is primarily entering and categorizing transactions, technology is getting better and better at doing that.

But that doesn't mean there isn't a need for a skilled bookkeeper.

It changes what makes the bookkeeper valuable.

Think about a roofing company using AccuLynx and QuickBooks Online.

AccuLynx can help automate the flow of information from the roofing company's CRM into QBO. QuickBooks can recognize transactions, suggest categories and find possible matches.

That's helpful.

But technology doesn't eliminate the need to understand what actually happened.

Did that deposit come from a customer payment already recorded in QBO?

Is it income, a transfer, loan proceeds or an owner contribution?

Should that bank-feed transaction be added—or matched to something that's already there?

Does the job income in QBO agree with what happened in the CRM?

Are the Balance Sheet accounts reconciled?

Does the job profitability make sense?

Those questions require more than data entry.

They require accounting knowledge, roofing knowledge and problem-solving skills.

That's where I believe the opportunity is for bookkeepers.

Don't fight AI.
Learn how to use it.

Let AI and automation help with the work they're good at. Then develop the skills that allow you to review the information, recognize when something doesn't make sense, solve the problem and communicate what the numbers mean to the business owner.

AI identifies and assists.

The bookkeeper investigates and decides.

Reconciliation verifies.

The more bookkeeping becomes automated, the more important it will be to understand the business behind the transactions.

Don't build your bookkeeping business around the part of bookkeeping that's easiest to automate.

Maybe it's bank feeds. #2 Mistake for Bookkeepers and Roofing Companies.

Maybe it's Undeposited Funds. #1 Mistake for Bookkeepers and Roofing Companies.

Maybe it's job costing.

Maybe it's understanding AccuLynx and QBO.

Maybe it's learning how to read the Balance Sheet instead of only looking at the P&L.

Pick one and start learning it.

This one got your attention! 👀

One of my most-watched recent videos was about connecting your roofing CRM with QuickBooks Online.

And I understand why.

A CRM and QBO shouldn't be two completely separate systems.

Your CRM helps manage the customer, sales and job.

QuickBooks helps manage the financial side of the business.

But when they're set up to work together, you can start connecting the whole picture:

Sales → Job Costs → Bookkeeping → Profit

If you're working with roofing contractors—or you're a roofing contractor yourself—understanding how these systems work together can make a huge difference.

Sales + Bookkeeping = Profit | The Roofing Company Connection

Sales + Bookkeeping = Profit

We've reached the final video in my 6-part Working With Roofing Contractors series.

And I'm bringing everything together with one of my favorite graphics:

SALES → PROFIT ← BOOKKEEPING
A roofing company needs both sides working together.
Sales brings the work and revenue into the company.

Bookkeeping shows what happened to the money after the sale—job costs, gross profit, overhead, cash flow and what's actually left.

And right in the middle is what we're all working toward:
PROFIT.

A great roofing bookkeeper isn't separate from the sales side of the business.

You need to understand how the company makes money so you can help the owner see whether they're actually keeping it.

That's why I teach roofing bookkeepers to go beyond entering transactions in QuickBooks.

Understand the business. Understand the numbers. Help protect the profit.

Your Roofing Numbers Are Wrong When These Systems Don’t Connect

A roofing company can have a great CRM and QuickBooks Online—and still have numbers that don't tell the whole story.

The key is understanding how the information moves between the two systems.

In Video #6 of my 7-part CRM & QuickBooks series, I continue showing how the CRM and QBO work together and why the bookkeeper needs to understand what is happening on both sides.

As a roofing bookkeeper, your job isn't simply entering transactions into QuickBooks.

You need to understand the roofing company's workflow so you can recognize when something is missing, duplicated, recorded incorrectly—or simply hasn't made it from one system to the other yet.

That's how you move from data entry to decision-making and become a much more valuable part of the roofing company's team.

**Want to become the bookkeeper a roofing company doesn't want to lose?**

Knowing QuickBooks isn't enough.

Roofing companies need bookkeepers who understand what happens **behind the numbers** — the CRM, customer payments, job costs, materials, subcontractors, payroll, cleanup, cash flow and how all of those pieces connect.

That's what we're working on inside **Roofing Legacy.**

This week our members joined me for our private Roofing Legacy Implementation Session.

I teach the process — and then members can bring their real questions, share their screen and get help implementing it in their own bookkeeping work.

Because the goal isn't to become someone who simply enters transactions.

**The goal is to become a bookkeeper who understands the roofing business and knows how to help the owner get reliable numbers.**

If you're a bookkeeper who wants to grow into that position — or a roofing company that needs help getting its accounting systems cleaned up and working correctly — message me **LEGACY**.

We'll talk about what you need and whether Roofing Legacy is the right next step.

**Are all of your roofing expenses actually connected to the jobs they belong to?**

If they're not, you may be looking at job profitability that isn't accurate.

In this week's video, I go inside the workflow and show how I use **purchase orders and expenses to connect costs to the correct roofing jobs.**

This matters because it's not enough to know:

**“We spent $20,000 on materials.”**

The roofing owner needs to know:

**Which jobs did we spend it on — and what did those jobs actually make?**

I also talk about vendor credits, because when materials are returned or credited, those credits need to make their way back to the correct job too.

Otherwise, your numbers aren't telling the whole story.

This is where bookkeeping moves beyond simply entering transactions.

**We're connecting the accounting to what actually happened on the job so the owner can make better decisions.**

Tomorrow we're sitting down for Roofing Conversations with Roman Pearl.

We're Excited to have him, I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunity if you're a Roofing Contractor or Bookkeeper.

Roman grew up in construction, started building homes at 18, and entered the roofing industry at 22.
He began in door-to-door sales, worked his way up to Project Manager, and eventually co-founded a roofing company that grew from $0 to $10 million in five years and was sold to private equity.
Today, Roman works with roofing companies to help owners grow, scale and build profitable businesses that can thrive without depending on the owner for everything.

We're going to have a real conversation about roofing, business, growth and what owners are seeing in the industry right now.

Tomorrow at 4 PM Central.
There is no replay.

What kind of roofing business are you actually trying to build?

Not every roofing contractor wants—or needs—the same kind of company.

One owner may want employees, salespeople, multiple crews and high volume.

Another may want a smaller operation with fewer jobs, lower overhead and more freedom.

Neither one is necessarily wrong.

But your pricing, marketing, systems, employees and financial decisions need to match the business you're trying to build.

In this week's video, I'm talking about two different types of roofing contractors/business owners and why knowing which one you are matters.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that bookkeeping is only for taxes.

It's not.

Your numbers should help you answer questions like:

🏠 Roofing Contractors

Is my advertising making me money?
Which jobs are the most profitable?
Can I afford to hire another employee?
Where is my cash really going?

📊 Bookkeepers

Are you helping your clients make better business decisions?
Can you explain the story behind the numbers?
Are your reports creating confidence for your clients?

Good bookkeeping isn't about entering transactions.

It's about giving business owners the information they need to make better decisions.

That's exactly what we'll be discussing during Roofing Conversations.
