✅ Line edging along walks and driveways as needed
✅ Blowing clippings off walks, driveways, and patios

You know that lawn you slow down to admire on your way through the neighborhood? The one with the crisp stripes running across the yard? That look starts with something surprisingly simple: the direction the grass bends. 🌱

The light and dark rows aren’t different grass colors or different cutting heights. Grass bent toward you generally looks darker, while grass bent away looks lighter. Walk to the other end of the yard, and the appearance can reverse!

Getting those lines straight and keeping the finish consistent takes a little technique.

Your first pass sets the direction for every row beside it. Looking ahead toward a fixed point helps you stay on course. From there, alternate directions, overlap each pass slightly, and give yourself room to turn gently without scuffing the grass.

And resist the temptation to cut shorter for a “cleaner” look. Keep the mowing height consistent and avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade at once. A sharp mower blade and a lawn that’s growing well do more for the finished appearance than repeatedly mowing over the same patch.

A striping attachment can strengthen the contrast, but careful mowing is where it begins. 🌿

Years of unchecked growth had turned a once-planted landscape into a wall of overgrown bushes and trees. Somewhere underneath it all was the opportunity for a beautiful front garden; but getting there meant starting with some serious demolition. 🌳🚜

The PHR crew cleared out the wildly overgrown vegetation, opening the space back up and giving this forgotten landscape a fresh start.

With the old growth gone, it was time to give the garden its new personality!

Boxwoods bring structure and a steady green backdrop, while variegated liriope adds lighter, striped foliage and a softer, grassy texture closer to the ground. Golden barberry introduces bright foliage color between the deeper greens, and laurels add lush, broad-leaved texture.

A crepe myrtle bush brings the promise of summer flowers, extending the garden’s interest beyond the spring season. And in the rounded corner section, a cherry tree creates a focal point, with crimson pygmy barberry accents adding rich burgundy contrast below. 🌳

That mix is what makes a planting bed interesting: different heights, leaf shapes, textures, and seasonal features working together, so flowers aren’t the only thing carrying the show.

The existing foundation drainage system also helped shape the renovation. This new garden was created around that infrastructure - because what happens beneath and around a planting bed matters just as much as how it looks.

Fresh organic brown mulch pulled the new planting together, helping conserve soil moisture and limit w**d growth. Repairs to the surrounding lawn completed the transformation, connecting the renewed garden with the rest of the front yard.

From a landscape that had lost its shape to a front garden with color, definition, and room for its new plants to grow. 🏡

PHR’S FAVORITES: Barberry (Golden & Pygmy)

Sometimes, one small splash of color is what brings an entire planting bed together. 👇🏡

CRIMSON PYGMY: A little plant with a big presence.

This freshly planted youngster beside the cherry tree is already drawing the eye! Its rich crimson-purple foliage creates a low accent beneath the taller tree, adding another layer of color and shape to the planting.

“Pygmy” refers to its naturally compact growth. It develops into a low, rounded shrub, generally reaching about 2–3 feet tall and growing somewhat wider. It will fill out with time, but its smaller scale is a big part of its appeal.

GOLDEN BARBERRY: A little sunshine through the bed.

Golden barberry brings bright yellow foliage into the mix, creating a beautiful contrast against green shrubs and darker leaves. That contrast helps individual plants stand out and keeps a bed visually interesting even when nearby flowers have finished blooming.

Its color comes from the leaves themselves—so you aren’t waiting for a brief flowering window to enjoy the effect! Light exposure matters, though: too much shade can shift that golden foliage toward green.

WHY DO HOMEOWNERS REQUEST THEM⁉️

Long-lasting foliage color, contrasting shapes, and relatively straightforward upkeep are a big part of the attraction. Established barberries tolerate some drought and are generally resistant to deer browsing; something plenty of New Jersey homeowners appreciate!

A few details make a difference:
• Both lose their leaves for winter; their color is seasonal.
• Well-drained soil matters, and new plantings still need attentive watering while roots establish.
• Their thorny stems deserve space away from walkways and frequently used areas.

Looking to bring more color and definition to your landscape? PHR Landscapes helps homeowners in Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Westfield, and nearby communities create thoughtfully arranged beds with plants suited to their property.

Walk with PHR! Some plants deserve a closer look - and this beautiful Crepe Myrtle is one! 🌳🌸

The flowers catch your attention first, but there’s plenty more to appreciate about this landscape standout. Here are a few reasons we love it:

🌸 It keeps summer color going. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, flowering can stretch into early fall, long after many spring-flowering trees have finished their show.

🌳 The bark is part of the beauty. As many varieties mature, their bark naturally peels away to reveal smooth, mottled trunks underneath. That peeling can be completely normal!

🍂 The show changes with the seasons. Fall foliage can bring shades of yellow, orange, or red, while the branching structure adds interest after the leaves drop.

☀️ Sunshine makes a difference. Crape Myrtles flower best in full sun. Here in New Jersey, choosing a variety with suitable cold hardiness, good drainage, and room to reach its mature size matters, too.

🌱 They can be late risers. Slow to leaf out in spring? Don’t count them out too quickly, they naturally wake up later than many other trees and shrubs.

And a care tip worth remembering: avoid cutting the tops back into stubs. Letting the right-sized variety develop its natural form makes for a healthier, more attractive specimen.

Imagine having a focal point like this to enjoy from your patio, kitchen window, or front walkway. The right plant in the right place can change how your whole property feels.

Ready to give your landscape that kind of character? PHR Landscapes can help you choose and install trees, shrubs, and complementary plantings that bring your outdoor space to life.

As fall settles in across New Jersey, and temperatures start to wind down, your landscape starts to change fast. 🍂

Flowers fade, perennials die back, leaves drop; Suddenly you can really see which properties were designed with year-round structure in mind. That’s where evergreen shrubs make a huge difference. 👇

You don't have to wait until spring to start planning a better landscape. 🍂 👀

This recent fall planting project in Scotch Plains shows just how much fresh plant material can transform a property - adding new color, texture, structure, and curb appeal at a time when many landscapes are beginning to fade.

Fall is also one of the best times to complete a planting job in New Jersey:

🌱 Warm soil continues to support root development

🌤️ Cooler air reduces stress on newly installed plants

🌧️ Seasonal rainfall helps maintain consistent soil moisture

💪 Plants can establish stronger root systems before winter

🌷 Perennials and bulbs planted now get a head start for spring

Whether your property needs new foundation plantings, colorful garden beds, privacy screening, replacement shrubs, or a complete landscape redesign, a professionally planned fall installation can improve how your property looks now, and help it return stronger next season.

PHR designs every planting project around the property’s sunlight, soil conditions, available space, and the homeowner’s long-term goals. The result is a landscape designed to look complete, grow properly, and provide interest across multiple seasons.

What does it take to create real privacy along a busy road? Walk with PHR: Privacy Trees 🌲

At this beautiful Fanwood property, the answer was approximately 100 Emerald Green Arborvita; Forming a dense, living screen that separates the home from passing traffic, helps buffer road noise and makes the entire outdoor space feel more peaceful and private.

In this Walk with PHR, we take a closer look at the finished hedge and explain three of our top privacy-tree recommendations:

🌲 Emerald Green Arborvitae

A refined, narrow-growing option that creates a dense and uniform hedge without occupying too much yard space. especially useful where planting depth is limited.

🌲 Green Giant Arborvitae

A larger, faster-growing choice for homeowners who want substantial height, coverage and a more commanding natural screen.

🌲 Leyland Cypress

A vigorous evergreen that can develop into a tall, full barrier when it has the right space and growing conditions.

The best privacy tree isn’t simply the one that grows fastest. Proper selection depends on the available space, desired height, sunlight, drainage and how quickly you want the screen to fill in.

Thinking about adding privacy to your property? PHR Landscapes can help you choose the right trees, develop the layout and professionally install a hedge designed for your specific yard.
